I guess I’m not sure of the rules about tackling. But to me that looks like a guy going after a players legs. Penalty??

It did look weird, but Williams did have the opportunity to run out of bounds before the hit. If you don't want to be hit, slide or get out of bounds. If you want to play running back, expect to be treated like one.

Used to piss me off when Rodgers used to fake running out of bounds and then run for 3 more yards.

I do indeed see Williams using the out of bounds threat to gain a few extra yards and I wish we didn't have to rely on his scrambles so often to pick up critical first downs where he has to do that. All that said, I don't have a problem with the location on the field he hit him as he clearly was still in bounds trying to gain yards but it's the method of the tackle and going for knees that seems to fly in the face of player safety. I also think every NFL fan can agree that the rules protecting QBs are not equally enforced across the NFL. The personal foul calls for late hits on a Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or back in the day a Tom Brady or Manning are definitely different than they are for QBs who are not faces of the NFL. The NFL knows that a Mahomes, Brady, Rodgers, or Manning being put out for the season due to a blown knee is huge revenue and so anything close or remotely up to interpretation is going to go in favor of protecting the player.

Blah blah blah this, blah blah blah that. At that point in the play HE IS NOT A QB, and as a result, is treated like a RB. the first point of contact is not his knees at all, he is actually hit in the hips/belt. I mean, YISUS Christ, why not turn it into flag football?

and he wasn't running out of bounds, he tried to stop and avoid the defender so he could continue running.

I'd have to look it up, but I think caveat is that you can't go low on a QB while he's in the pocket.

And if he goes a foot and a half higher, then you have helmet to helmet.

CW seems to forget sometimes that he is in the NFL. On that play he broke down as if he were going to try and give a fake. It's best to get what you can get and 1) get out of bounds or 2) get down. Every play doesn't have to be the knock-out. Hopefully he learns that under Brown.

Don't try to do too much, just get out of bounds. I didn't like that hit one bit.

So now if Lions head coach Dan Campbell gets cranky, it is okay to go after a QB's knees? I wonder if that applies to the Lions QB as well?

This is the part that pisses me off now. Not the QB faking it. The refs calling a penalty if you hit them while still in bounds.

Mahomes recently tuned one upfield and gained ten or so more yards, and of course analysts went wild But two weeks prior he was hit while fully in bounds and the color guy on the broadcast called for a flag saying "You know where he was headed."
Refs allow them to have it both ways.

I still say they should have a 2-3 foot area on the sideline out of bounds where there is no flag for contact. If you're running out to stop the clock or protect yourself, keep going. But don't flag a defender for hitting you when you both reach the sideline at the same time.

Similar to the QB in the pocket, you can see QBs taking advantage of defenders constantly slowing down to avoid penalties. How many more sacks would we see if defenders didn't have to slow down the second a QB raises his arm to throw?

Why are you surprised?

The lions tore up plenty of guys knees already, its what dan campbell was hired for.

If that hit was on mahomes 10 flags get thrown and the player is ejected

You mean he's not defenseless there?
That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm just saying that going low on a QB in the pocket will (might, still haven't checked - probably won't) draw the automatic flag, while when he's a runner going out of bounds the ref might judge it differently.

They're discussing it right now on ESPN. Showing QBs faking going out of bounds or faking the start of a slide.

The discussion they're having is whether it's fair to allow QBs to fake, and Little Adam Schefter weighs in explaining to us that QBs are valuable and that's why the league has these rules.

Brilliant insight! Next he will tell us water is wet.

The best part is he says it with this whisper like he is divulging some great secret he alone discovered.

Very bad decision for him to try that move. What's interesting is he usually slides a couple of yards early, so it was very uncharacteristic of him to try to extend the play here.
