Can someone explain this jersey to me? Am I missing something about a Trail Blazer? What the heck does "Rip City" have to do with the Trail Blazers?

I would hate to chalk this up to some immature ghetto crap that the NBA is prone to, but what the hell is "Rip City?"

I'm ignorant on the subject and would love to be enlightened.

Well, I remember Blazers' fans were all holding up signs saying "Rip City, Baby!" all the way back in the 1992 Finals. I guess that's just their nickname for Portland, OR.

The Rockets' fans deemed Houston "Clutch City" during their 1994-1995 title runs.

So if the NBA was immature and ghetto back 15-20 years ago, too, then I guess you could still chalk it up to that if you want. Do you remember the Jail Blazers by any chance?

Sheed
Ruben Patterson
Bonzi Wells
Damon Stoudamire

Those guys, and maybe others, could go longer than a month without one of them getting arrested.

Well, here is a thoughtful response. Thank you. Any clue what the rip in rip city means?

I'm just looking for more knowledge.

The term was coined by the team's legendary play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Found this on google , not sure what the context was

Your first response was informative. This response is just full of speculation and quite frankly, wrong. Ghetto, for me, doesn't mean being arrested at all. I just claimed ignorance on what "rip city" means. Any and all overreactions to what I said will just solidify what I already thought, but continue on... to my amusement ;) :) ;) :) ;) :)

I wasn't trying to come across as an ass actually but my bad if that's what it seemed like. I honestly didn't know where "Rip City" came from. But I do kind of disagree with the assertion that getting arrested non-stop for marijuana possession and sexual abusive doesn't relate at all to ghetto life. I know that stuff happens everywhere but I know from second-hand experience that stuff goes down in the ghetto at a significantly high rate!

it started back in the 70s, according to Yahoo Answers....from what I can gather, their play-by-play guy used to use it to refer to the ball swishing through the net on a jumper

hope that helps

I liked Damon Stoudamire. Before he jumped off the edge, he was one of the fastest full court players I had ever seen.
