I am a casual Sox fan and I keep hearing about Flowers, Hudson, Viciedo, Morel, ect...

Can you let me know who you think will be non-tendered or let go this off season. Who will come up from the farm and be a mainstay on the roster next year. Who do you think the Sox will target in the FA market this offseason.

Thank you for the help.

As for players under contract, here are the guys that will most definitely be back:

Jake Peavy - SP
Mark Buehrle - SP
Alex Rios - CF
Juan Pierre - LF
Edwin Jackson - SP
Mark Teahen - 3B/Util/DH
Gavin Floyd - SP
Alexei Ramirez - SS
Gordon Beckham - 2B
Sergio Santos - RP
Chris Sale - RP
Matt Thornton - RP
Scott Linebrink - RP
Ramon Castro - C

Players likely to be re-signed:

Paul Konerko - 1B/DH
John Danks - SP
Carlos Quentin - RF/DH
Tony Pena - RP
JJ Putz - RP

Players that are FA's or Arb-eligible that I hope/could be are gone/non-tendered/traded:

Mark Kotsay
Bobby Jenks
AJ Pierzynski
Andruw Jones
Freddy Garcia

Lefty you're missing ManRam! He's an FA. Which if he helps big time and there's no other DH in FA i say sign him to 1 yr deal

That's 19 players that will more than likely be back in their respective roles: 5 SP, 6 RP, 6-7 of the other 8 starting positions and a couple of back-ups.

As far as salary goes, the team is looking at around $80.5 million for those players under contract, club options and non-arb-eligible players earning the minimum. Figure another $14 million for the arb-contracts to be gotten by Danks, Quentin and Pena, then you have to re-sign Konerko and Putz to round out the 19, so add another $15 million or so and we're looking at $110 million or thereabouts for 19 guys.

He doesn't want a one-year deal, he's 38 and his agent is Scott Boras. Not happening.

Lefty who from our farm do you see making the team next year? I'm sure if you expect AJ to be on his way than Flowers would be our starting catcher next year?

Ummmmm no. He's likely starting out 2011 in AAA and probably will be up in the rotation by midseason.

cooper said on the radio that he fits the closer role the best today.

Absolutely today he fits the closer role because he isn't stretched out. The problem with him getting into the rotation. as I see it, is if Peavy can return. If, and I understand that's a big if, Peavy can return, the Sox have a starting 5 without Sale.

Initially, I thought he was projected as a starter, though.

Lucas Harrell didn't have a bad start agianst Oakland. He could be a spot starter for next year or injury insurance because Peavy has got me nervous

That depends a lot on how much money JR is willing to commit to this team for next season, and to be honest I don't think it's going to be all that much more than was spent this year, if he is willing to spend more at all. What's more, it depends a lot on what kind of plan the Sox have in place for Flowers and prospects of his ilk, and what kind of developmental philosophy is: do they see him as a big-time MLB contributor or just trade bait for veterans, and how willing are you to just plop him down in the starting lineup night after night regardless of outcome?

In the end, I really don't know, because it depends on what the owner is willing to spend, which players without contracts will be likely to decline arbitration and which FA's the team could go after with that extra cash. What's more, this farm system has been dismantled piece by piece over the last few years, so there really aren't that many prospects able to fill voids left by departed MLB regulars. I would like to see Flowers get a shot (if the team is dead-set against going after the likes of Victor Martinez), because if he is even replacement-level for the team next year, they receive a performance boost from the catcher position over what they got this year out of AJ.

Other than that, perhaps Viciedo gets a shot to fill in as a 1B/DH, if Brent Morel comes out of the gates mashing in AAA, I'd like to see him get time at 3B/DH, and after that it starts to get pretty thin. Though I will say this: a lot depends on how Jared Mitchell returns from his foot/ankle injury. He has a chance still to be the Sox' top MLB prospect, so if he can fully recover from what happened to him and get better in the areas he was working on before his injury, he could be the deciding factor in the outlook of the minor league system for the next two or three seasons.
