Tell me what's up with my car.

Last couple of days to and from work (about 5 miles each way, not a long drive at all), I have noticed my car begin to shake, and then stop shaking. It'll be fine for a couple of miles, then I feel it slowly building up a shake, and it will shake pretty heavy for a second when I brake. But then when I speed up again, it doesn't happen, and when I brake again at the next light, it still doesn't happen.

I figured something to do with the calipers or the U joint or something in the wheels, but if it was that I figured it would do it more consistently. It seems to happen mostly at slower speed, like 30-ish and shakes more as I brake, and then stops. But not all the time. Only occasionally. I'm stumped.

Simple thoughts first. Spark plugs, plug wires, cylinders, filters. If it's happening while braking, could be warped rotors.

No car expert, but I have done all my own repairs on an old valiant, which is a far easier car to evaluate and work on than most.

If it's related to the brakes, yeah, gotta check those. Could be an unbalanced tire or hub problem.

But if it's just coincidentally happening at certain speeds, first thing I would check are the motor mounts and it could be something with airflow, from the MAF to a clog in the cat(s).

Last winter I was driving along and the car was shaking and felt like I was on wobbly wheels. Got back home and checked the internet before going in for repairs. Read about snow and ice or wheel weights falling off that could make that huge difference in the ride. Turned out a chunk of ice was lodged in my rim and tire and what a huge difference it made once I sprayed it off.

Back in the day, I worked on my car myself but no more. I just like to check for the simple stuff first. After that I let the dealership handle it hoping that shit will be under warranty still.

Check your wheels.
Might have thrown a balance weight or worse.
Check the lugs and see a pro before something bad happens.

I'm taking it in tomorrow afternoon. I figure it's something to do with the balance.

I was an automotive engineer for 11 years. I literally designed automotive components, but it was all electronics, window switches and such, so I have no idea. I just wanted to brag. Did you check for Irish? Sometimes they get caught up in the tires.

Watching old Magnum PI episodes, saw this car. While it's kind of ugly.... Can anyone ID it? Been a long time since I couldn't ID a car make/model.

If it's rough turning the car could be rack and pinion

Not a bad guess. It's a 72-76 Subaru 1400 (Leone). Don't care which year, but I'm leaning on 73, because it seems to have the options of a 73. Show was aired in late 81, in Hawaii with salt water air, and after reading about how painful it was to maintain these, that is possibly rarer than the 308 Magnum is driving.

Check your plugs. Sounds like it could be a misfire. Do you notice any lagging or shuddering when you accelerate from stop?

Edit-never mind
