:turrible:

He's easily one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball and even if he his on the Cardinals, you don't celebrate.

At least outloud. :smug:

But seriously, this sort of sucks all around for baseball this year.

It looks like he will get TJS. It sucks for the Cards. Never good to be happy about an inury to a player. But Cubs fans should be. Sucks for him and the Cards!

I could care less about the Cards but I hate it for him and his career.

Could this be a blessing in disguise for the Cards? The issue with signing Pujols is their lack of money. If Wainright is injured they have a legitimate reason to not pick up his options without the fan base freaking out. This gives the Cards some flexibility that they didn’t have during the off season negotiations.

This shouldn't be too hard to fulfill:

I mean, someday. But our odds of it this year just got higher. They still aren't high, but this definitely helps. I'm definitely living to see it barring a freak accident.

@Dan, Na, it won't help STL. If they don't pick up an option in order to keep Pujols, then their pitching still gets worse. They'll be a worse team either way, because bringing back Pujols won't improve them, as they already had him. May help them keep Pujols, but won't help them get better.

I agree this situation won't help them any. It was just a thought I had; that this may solve their problem of resigning Pujols. Freed up money is all. Losing Wainright screws them pretty hard and resigning Pujols won't make up for it.

I'm happy this helps our chances but also wish the guy a full recovery. Even Cardinals players are human beings ;)

No, they are not.

Theriot is much lower than a human being.

It's the exact opposite, actually. They had Wainwright signed for 9 million next year. Assuming he ends the year on the DL, that won't vest. Therefore, Wainwright's payday is going to come sooner. With him making more, they are basically going to have to decide if they want him or Pujols. If they go with Pujols, don't be surprised if the Cubs swoop in and get Wainwright.

I could easily live with Fielder, Wainwright, and Phillips... even though I still believe that we couldn't fit it in with the current payroll. But Ricketts seems to be raising it, so... it could happen. And we'd have to wait until after the deadline to think about payroll for sure.

That would also be letting A-Ram walk though... Wood will hopefully take another big discount too...

BUT, would he be the same Adam Wainwright?

He's having the surgery:
THURSDAY, 10:01am: GM John Mozeliak confirmed that Wainwright will undergo Tommy John surgery according to the team's official Twitter feed. The injury will keep him on the shelf for all of 2011.
