CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs placed pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the disabled list Friday after lower back soreness cut short his start Thursday against the San Francisco Giants.
Reliever Kerry Wood took Zambrano's spot on the roster after being activated from the disabled list.
Zambrano, who will have an epidural, threw 34 pitches before complaining of soreness and leaving the game in the second inning.
After leaving Wrigley Field, Zambrano honored a previous commitment by going to throw out the first pitch at a Chicago Bandits professional softball game in Lisle, Ill. Cubs manager Mike Quade on Friday dismissed the idea that Zambrano risked aggravating the condition.
"Sounds like much ado about nothing," Quade said.
Zambrano told CSN that he felt pain in his back while covering first base on a bunt by Brandon Crawford in the second inning.
An epidural involves injection of drugs directly into the spinal canal to relieve pain. The procedure is frequently used for childbirth.
The burly right-hander suffered from lower back spasms in 2009 that landed him on the disabled list for more than three weeks.

So every SP but Demp has been on DL now.
Ramon Ortiz is expected to make start on TUE for Cubs also. All people talk about is rebuilding but Cubs dont even have young pitchers to bring up now for starts. Sad they have to get guys like Davis, Lopez, and Ortiz to start games. If any of young Cub pitchers showed anything at all they would be up by now
