This is a great idea, then not only can the state be broke, but it's residents too.

I thought everyone just gambled on online casinos these days.

What are the actual issues with building casinos these days? Same ones as there have always been or are their newer concerns? Because those old concerns have turned out to be hogwash more often than not.

Are there specific concerns for the state here which only Illinois face that other states never have or wouldn't?

People that want to gamble are going to find some way to do it anyway so I'd rather see the money stay in our state than go to Iowa.

"Emanuel said Thursday that he doesn't want the revenue a casino would bring for city coffers, but would rather divert it to schools."

First off, I do not live in Chicago however Rockford is slated for one of those other cities to get a license if it were to happen. I am in favor of the casino locally but have a concern that we are getting too many within our borders.

With that being said, I take issue to what Emanuel says about directing the money to the schools. I would love to ask him, "Umm, Rahm, would your diverting of the return from the casino's be similiar in nature to what the state has done to schools with the lottery money on a state level?"

I would demand in writing that the city would continue to fund the schools at current levels with the added casino money on top. Otherwise Chicago schools would end up just like the State of Illinois school funding.

They do? I thought they really went after that in the last few years. Am I wrong?

Well I am assuming its a state issue in America like it is a provincial one in Canada and not federal (typically our law jurisdictions are similar). No lack of advertisements on television and billboards in this province supporting online gambling (all you need is a disclaimer and everything good) Seems to be growing here along side the casinos that pop up everywhere and have zero negative effects on the community except on a very micro level (which was already there). I have seen nothing but positives that have come out of the Casinos build in this province beyond stimulation from the taxing. Job creation...small business creation around the casinos and in the neighborhoods...a more social climate...big boosts in tourism. No crime levels have raised, no higher reports of gambling addictions (although that ones not really an easy stat to collect)....no higher marital problems. All those fears that came with building them here never came to be. I have a hard time believing that it's different anywhere else unless you are stupid enough to build them in the slums.

This is why I asked if there were specific issues that only the state of Illinois would be facing that others may not.

People can gamble on online casinos that are out of country as well. I write for a casino website (yup, I'm classy like that) and anyone from any country can get up on there and gamble. It's like other sites with 18+ content, that have disclaimers.

I don't understand why people get so up in arms about casinos and gambling in general. People waste their money on giant cars and houses and other "keeping up with the Jones'" type shit, spending money they don't have to be "normal" but a casino is atrocious. Why not outlaw the lottery? I'm sure there are thousands of people whose lives are ruined by scratch tickets.

If they ever tries to take my scratch tickets away I have one thing to say about it..."I'll give you my scratch tickets when you take them from my dead cold hands"!! Our countries be it the USA or Canada have been built and sustained (as have our communities) by things like gambling and casinos just as much as they have been by guns and military and church and all that other good stuff people praise.

second favorite hypocrisy of the day. When someone who gambles on stocks tells me that Casinos should be banned because gambling is dangerous and brings the worst out of people and communities. And like all other hypocrisies....it happens aaaaalll the time.

Casinos are a problem for some people because of their archaic viewpoints. Christian views on gambling, the association with "evil" and "sin", etc. Pretty absurd.

Yet those same people play the stock markets and would sell out their gods and religious ideals for stronger stocks and investments (well they would sell them out then repent and thank their gods for the stronger stock). I just don't thank god when I get three liberty bells on a slot machine. I know it's some microchip doing all the work and good old fashion chance.

funny because bingo has always been a great money maker for a lot of small churches and religious groups. But Bingo isn't gambling now is it? And you never see bingo in casinos....NEVER. Churches and religions and community groups have always done well with gambling. There is nothing wrong with it and nothing wrong with religious sectors using that means. It becomes a problem when the double face rears.

I've read there were issues due to the casino in Elgin here, but I can't remember details. I'd have to look them up.

Well, there's some pretty unsavory areas in the Elgin area. Especially South Elgin. Were the issues due to the Casino, or just the area? Who knows.

No. South Elgin is really nice. Downtown Elgin is a shithole.

I'm not against really against casinos at all and used to go to the Grand Victoria a long time ago. I just remember reading about how it wasn't working well for the town.

I could be mistaken.

I prefer blood... Rahm's blood. But that's just me.

With this state being as corrupt as it is, writing alone doesn't cut it nowadays.
