I think Pat Foley had it right when I heard him say in the 80's - that Denis Savard was just as important to his team as Michael Jordan was to the Bulls (disclaimer- this was before the Bulls had won a championship -which I don't think happened until Savard had been traded for Chelios).
Larmer was great, and consistent, etc - but Savard was on another plane - nearly Gretzky-like -and arguably a much more exciting player.
I remember there was one game where Savvy was centering a penalty kill -actually it was a 5 on 3 -and he was the only forward naturally. It was against the Oilers- and he beat all 5 guys on the ice and scored short-handed.
The guy was incredible to watch -- another thing Foley said about Savvy - Savvy did stuff on the ice during games that other guys might only have the guts to try in practice. I think he was referring to the spin-o-rama.
Thank Montreal for taking Doug Wickenheiser.
