If you're a baseball fan, you gotta love the stones being displayed in Cincy. They are not like the Cubs who will still draw even if they're bad...they will be taking a financial hit over the next few years but they're doing it the right way, so I applaud their front office. But...wow, they should be real cream puffs for the next few seasons.

A lot of things are setting the Cubs up for a 100+ win season, imo. I know the win total doesn't mean anything, so keep it to yourself, but with the Brewers, Cincy, even Pitt trading some players, and the overall poor quality of some of the NL teams, as it looks so far, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Cubs and Cards both win a lot of games.

They made contract mistakes. They went for it. Nothing is guaranteed.

Why? TV money >> gate receipts and they have a fairly decent TV deal for a small market team.

What exactly are they doing the right way?

Tearing the whole thing down to the foundation after some bad contract mistakes like SilenceS mentioned. 6 of their 10 top prospects have been acquired in the last year through trades and they're likely to pick up a couple of more from what's left. Add a couple of 1st round draft picks and they could turn this around in 3-4 years like the Cubs and Astros did if they draft wisely. The fly in that ointment is that both the players and Rob Manfred want some new rules in the CBA to prevent the "tank to win" philosophy. We'll see how it plays out.

By the way, I'd love to get Andrew Miller from the Yankees for something like Underwood+Almora+Vogelbach. Cubs then can have a rotation of

Guys who go 7ish innings
Arrieta, Lester, Lackey

Guys who get the first two times through the order
Hendricks, Hammel

Guys who can pitch 1-2 innings before the 7th
Wood, Warren, Cahill, Richard

LOOGY (1 guy)
Edwards/Rosscup/Olmos

Guys who pitch the 7th
Grimm, Strop

Guy who pitches the 8th/9th based on match-up
Rondon/Miller

The beauty of this type of bullpen is that if you stagger the starters (i.e have Hendricks/Hammel pitch in spots 2, 4 of the rotation), you can move a guy around to give him a day off quite easily.

Why? Because they would've had that anyway.....I don't care how you look at it losing about a third or more of your usual attendance is a financial hit.

Yeah but if you pair that hit in attendance with drastically cutting the player salaries, you're fine financially.
