A friend of mine who is a Washington fan was happy with the signing because he was a probowler who can help Cosmi. I'm like, yes, that's one way of looking at it.

Now, my question is, if it was a 6/1 cut, wouldn't that mean that he is still on The Bears until 6/1? Shouldn't this have been a trade?

I'm happy for him.
Hopefully it's a wake up move and he turns in right way back.

Good for him Leno was a average LT that just caused a bunch of penalties.

Trading him would mean WAS takes on his contract w/ BEars (around $10M this year). Instead they are paying him $5M - WAS may very well have decided they like him at 5 but no thanks at 9.

No.

The Bears' contract had Leno making 11-12 million in 2021. He signed with Washington for 5 million and cost no picks.
Okay, so, even though, technically, Leno's still on the Bears, it's not a trade. So, this must be a post-6/1 signing.

Leno is not, or was not, still on the Bears. He was cut, but designated as a 6/1 cut. It used to be you couldn’t cut a player until June 1 to have that designation, but no longer. You can cut them any time. It’s just a way to be fairer to veteran players while managing the salary cap.

:jonesy: He was not even remotely close to average last season.

Yeah, I defended Leno a lot over his career here, but these last two seasons were terrible.

A lot of people go by PFF scores for players they are not familiar with, especially the offensive line.

Leno is adequate protecting a QB who is actively trying to be contained inside the pocket by the defense (no inside counters). But when he has to consistently defend his inside shoulder as well as his outside shoulder for a pocket passer, his game falls apart.

I was told he wouldn't even get signed by an NFL team
