The Bucks chose not to extend a qualifying offer to Charlie Villanueva, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The free agent market is small, and it's likely Charlie V. will be unable to field an offer larger than the MLE, which puts us into the equation if we're willing to spend a little money.

He averaged 16.2 PPG 6.7 RPG 1.8 APG in 26.9 minutes per game last year.

The guy has a bit of a reputation as not caring, selfish, etc.

He was a member of the 2004 UConn championship team with Ben Gordon, so maybe Gordon would be able to reel him in.

Contenders like Cleveland, San Antonio, Orlando, will no doubt have interest. But those teams may not be willing to offer more than a 1 or 2 year deal. If we offer a 5 year deal, Villanueva might want to sign with us, just for the security...and there is no guarantee that any of the contenders offer him a contract, despite the Cleveland rumors.

I've seen you state the importance of good defense from the frontcourt, and I completely agree with that. I think any big men the team adds have to be good defenders. Villanueva is a horrendous defender for a PF.

Besides, where would he play? you got Salmons, Deng, Tyrus, Johnson, Gibson, Tim all at the 3/4 spots.

Personally, I wouldn't be against going after him if it was for a MLE type offer. He would be the leading post scorer we currently have and could slide to the bench IF we ever sign a star big. The Bulls cannot lay all their hopes and prayers on Chris Bosh and miss opportunities for other quality bigs. Keep in mind, we have been in the market for a big for about 4 years. Go for a hard core big, or sign a decent guy like Charlie V or Paul Millsap to take up the space until you "hope" you find that piece.

If you can get him for the MLE then he's reasonable value at that price and you'd have to consider it. I'm assuming Tyrus is out the door so there's room for him.

People will rightly point out he's not a good defender at all and he's more of a volume than efficient scorer, but the fact is you're not going to get a perfect player for the MLE.

i always thought he was more of a jumpshooter... thats not really what we need right now. he'd be like another luol deng, basically. but maybe hes healthier?

maybe we should first figure out where we're gonna put the other dozen pf's we have on the roster.

He'd be great there. He would really open up space for shaq and bron to work.
