Kind of strange on the surface. Brooks doesn't do anything for me. Seems more like a salary dump of Coghlan. Wouldn't surprise me to see Austin Jackson signed later today.

Looks like you might be right on that one. I still thought they could nab Jackson and him both but maybe Jackson ends up with more money than I thought.

Also Brooks is mildly interesting as a AAA depth pitcher. Good bb/9 rates and ok k/9. Looks like a 5th starter maybe at best but the cubs don't have a ton of AAA starter depth as we discussed in the Parra thread.

Good luck to Coghlan. I hope he gets the playing time with the A's.

Little info I dug up seems like Brroks is kind of like Hendricks. He's got a good change up and a 91 mph fastball and the previously mentioned good walk rates.

Seems like an interesting move, I hope they bring back Jackson now. Can never have too much depth at SP, and if Baez is really making the move to the OF this clears up more AB for him

Coghlan out for Fowler in. I don't even. WHAT? Is Kyle going to catch?

One other interesting thought I had on Brooks, is how the cubs have managed to trade guys like Valbuena and Cogs off the scrap heap for more usable parts like Fowler and Brooks with years of control. Brooks probably wont set the world on fire but it's years of control for upper minors pitching. Obviously Fowler changes this equation some but even without him you were trading a year of Cogs for multiple years of Brooks.

Jesse Rodgers is saying the Cubs view Soler as the new Coghlan

Yes. And play LF, and who knows what else. Maddon likes to move people around, and Theo and Jed have built him the ultimate flexible team. So many people can play so many positions. I've been watching 2015 games I didn't see on MLBTV, but man I can't want for this season to begin. Even if the Cubs don't win the WS, this is just going to be so much fun to watch.

Aaron Brooks is a more usable part than Coghlan? Hmmm...

Soler = Coghlan? Hmmmm....

I just hope this doesn't mean we Soler gets traded or even platooned. We already have Fowler AB's at the expense of Soler. Not a great thing.

But overall, the depth and flexibility the Cubs now have is impressive.

fangraphs had this to say about brooks which i found interesting

There are things for the Cubs to like about Brooks. There were things for the Cubs to like about Coghlan, but he was superfluous. Brooks has racked up barely any service time. He can be optioned to the minors, and in the minors he’s been a successful strike-thrower. There’s still work for Brooks to do if he wants to cement himself as a big-leaguer, but he owns a good changeup, and he’s maybe a tweak away from being Kyle Gibson, who owns an almost identical repertoire. Gibson himself is maybe a tweak away from being a No. 2, but Gibson now is a decent comp for Brooks, if he can locate a little bit better. Brooks slightly improves the Cubs’ future pitching situation, and he’s also more depth for the year ahead.

I've seen other things similar to this. I have never seen Brooks pitch but to get an arm that has upside that you can develop in AAA for a competent, but admittedly fringe starter, OF with one year of control is hardly the throwaway that I've seen so many people say that it was. One guy on another site yesterday said he would preferred an A ball pitching prospect to Brooks. I'm sorry to me that's silly. This is a guy that a lot of people like coming up in the system, has a good low 90's fastball that some think might have an uptick in velocity in relief and is still only 25 years old with options. An A ball pitcher is still an almost complete unknown quantity.

As this team stands right now....I would say that the chances of ever seeing the same lineup two games in a row is minimal. I'm not sure I've ever seen a team that is so stacked in position players. Just a ton of options for Maddon.

But.....

Really, really need the starting pitching to stay healthy.

You always need the pitching to stay healthy and I would feel more comfortable with one more guy closer to a TOR starter than a BOR starter, but all that said there are redundancies at the back of the rotation. The are reports that Cahill looks really, really good in camp and Adam Warren was the Yankees best starter for the first 2 1/2 months of the season in 2015. They essentially have at least 2 extra BOR starters, some with potential beyond that. I think they could sustain a short term injury to almost any of the pitchers and be fine. Long term is a different story but keep your fingers crossed.
