First things first - I want to preface this by saying I felt like Pace and Nagy should have been fired this offseason, and the rebuild should have begun now.

And for perspective, the situation we are in now is what happens when you get it wrong on a franchise QB, and then are unable to get a QB good enough in trade or free agency to jump in when your window is.

Had the Bears drafted DeShaun Watson, we would have been on schedule. The defense peaked in 2018, and is still a top 15 defense the past 2 years but sliding in the wrong direction. Having a franchise QB would have more than equalized that, and the defense would have been good enough to be contenders. The truth that is so damn hard for Bears fans to accept is that, for the most part, Ryan Pace built a damn good team, and it's peak readiness to compete was these past 3 years...

...Except for that damn quarterback position. And because of the importance of that positon, that is why I was willing to say so long to Pace - he's gotten it laughably wrong every....single...time.

I don't hold Dalton against him though - any player after the rush of potentially getting Russell Wilson will seem like dog crap, and frankly, all that's left are quarterbacks of Dalton's caliber, even the ones that signed elsewhere - sure, they all have different ways of losing, but they are all roughly in the same tier of quarterback - just pick one of your 31 flavors of bad.

But that's what you are left with when you get the quarterback wrong.

And even with Nagy - I won't overall say he's a "bad" coach. But he is a coach who just runs a collection of plays - no real identity whatsoever. So he needs a strong-willed quarterback to give his "collection of plays" an identity, for that quarterback to take ownership and put his own personal stamp on it. That is something Wilson would have done. That is something "aw shucks" Mitch never would have been able to (along with never being able to consistently make it past his first read).

Put Wilson on this team right now, or a Derek Carr or a Watson, and this team, as is, competes for a Superbowl. Even without Allen Robinson.

But that caliber of quarterback rarely becomes available.

And I don't feel like even if the Bears were to trade up in this draft, that any of these quarterbacks they could get would be "the guy".

Which leads me to my point; the Bears are faced with a choice now that I know they won't get right:

Either trade off all your older players for whatever picks you can get them for, or suffer in mediocrity as your team slides into NFL hell for the next 5 years, and by the time you are able to climb out and draft another QB, it will likely take another 3 years to build something back up. I know some of you can point out quick turnarounds of other NFL teams, but the Bears are not in a position to be one of those - they are in Salary Cap hell, and will be for at least 2-3 years.

The right call here is to sell the farm and restock with young talent.

Players to trade/release:
  • Nick Foles
  • Jimmy Graham
  • Kyle Fuller
  • Khalil Mack
  • Akiem Hicks
  • Danny Travathan
  • Tashaun Gipson Sr
  • Demetrius Harris
  • Eddie Jackson
  • Anthony Miller
  • Rober Quinn
  • Allen Robinson
  • Eddie Goldman
  • Anyone other than Cody Whitehair 27 and older.

Core to build around:

  • Interior Line - (Whitehair-Mustipher-Daniels)
  • Young O-Line up and comers (Barrs, Simmons, Hambright)
  • Cole Kmet
  • David Montgomery
  • Darnell Mooeny
  • Roquan Smith
  • Bilal Nichols
  • Jaylon Johnson

That is actually a core you can build with, using the right moves.

Unfortunately, even though pulling the trigger on this is the right move right now, Pace and Nagy won't do it - because they won't be around to rebuild.

All because the Bears whiffed on their shot at a franchise Quarterback.

The next time anyone here wants to understate the importance of the franchise qb position, reference this thread. Because everything you see the Bears going through right now, and the NFL we fans are about to experience, are all consequences of NOT HAVING A FRANCHISE QB.

And that's why even if you have to trade the other 52 players and all your draft picks for a sure thing Franchise QB - it is ALWAYS worth it....

..... So long as you get it right......

Ahhh, no

Not after the cost you would have to pay for any of those, and not without AR.

Rebuilding doesn't work. If it we would be basking in awe at the dynasties of the Jaguars, Lions, Browns, Jets etc. What does work is building in the trenches, trying to win games every year and drafting quarterbacks (as dismal as the success rate is, its really the only way most of the time). Then its just a matter of having the right coach, with the right roster and having a few things your way.

This idea that the Bears need to be bad to be good is proven wrong by the fact that the Bears are usually pretty bad and it never seems to really lead to them being good.

I've been saying this for years now. Browns have been picking top 5 for many years and they're only just now starting to see results, and they're not exactly the Buffalo Bills right now. perennial dogshit teams are run by organizations as shitty as the Bears. if you need to reach really high to get a stud quarterback though, the Bears can't even do that right, they try to win games against shit teams when they have no business trying to compete in the playoffs, 2020 being a great example. oh, you get the feel good moment of actually winning, but against shit teams it isn't proving anything other than you're a dipshit casual that cares little about draft position. even if the Bears lost 3 more games, they still wouldn't be in the running, there's a lot of garbage AFC teams crowding the top 5, the Bears right now appear to be picking #20. for the sake of argument, all the people that believe you can only get a quarterback extremely early in the 1st, I agree with you.

on the other hand though, there have been great teams that turned awful in one offseason and vice versa. the parity of the NFL is crazy. I just hope Pace has some kind of 8D chess plan for dealing Foles and/or Dalton for picks or something psychotic that no sensible team will bite on. I don't hold out much hope.

to the point about building in the trenches, I'm intrigued at how the CCS narrative that the Bears need to draft offensive linemen disappeared in the waning weeks of the season and went all in on trading 18 picks for another team's quarterback. do you want to build a championship caliber team or not? because Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, or Russell Wilson's performances with their respective teams isn't going to translate to the Bears whether you want to embrace that fact or not.

This, I'm all for building the trenches but Bears will never get an chance at a QB like Russell ever again...not in the foreseeable future IMO, Day 1 FA signing like this is not an good move by Pace one bit. I remember the bears being called desperate recently....BUt Dalton happened, this is just NOT a good sign. Both Tackle position are #1 or #2 priorities right now, last thing the bears need is not being able to protect a Qb next season.

Must also put significant weight on the complete lack of OTs worth a shit (PACE & NAGY) and subsequent inability and unwillingness to run the ball (NAGY). No QB except top tier can overcome having shit run game, fairly shit protection, and Nagy's numbskull play calling on top of that mushy foundation (RPO offense with no R and obvious P & O).

+ yes, missed on Mitch. Boo hoo. Pivot & move on. Costs more now, but doable.

Not sure why everybody thinks the season starts tomorrow and there's no move to be made for a QB til then? They got Ifedi as a moderately serviceable RT/Bars, can draft a starting LT early, and still possibly draft a QB or hit the Watson/Wilson sweepstakes in AUG for cheaper than now when buyers market goes dry and those teams are at a stalemate.

Or hit panic button now bec media blowhards assume Red Rocket is plan A. ?‍♂️

This.

The o-line has been an issue for two years. Ppl are upset that Houston & Seattle didn't trade their MVP caliber QBs to the Bears. It wasn't going to happen. The draft appears to be loaded with o-line and defensive players.

what logical purpose does having Nick Foles and Andy Dalton both on the roster right now? one of them has to be desirable to some needy team so I can only surmise this is to try to maybe deal one of them?

Can someone explain to me how "building in the trenches" and "rebuilding" are two different things?

Pointing out teams that have failed to "rebuild" is not proof that "rebuilding" doesn't work, only that those teams failed to do it.

Using this logic, the Bears should never draft or trade for a franchise QB because they have not been able to do it before.

Being mediocre is the worst thing a team can be in the NFL. Mediocre teams tend to stay mediocre for years.

Awful teams, on the other hand, have a chance to get better fast, provided they draft well. The 49ers come to mind - second worst team in the NFL one year, playing in the Super Bowl the next.

So, bottom out, as in Miami?

The Mcllaskys don't bottom out this isn't the NBA.
They embrace mediocrity and never cared about winning a championship

OP, I respectfully disagree.

This team either needs improved QB play OR to get a little better at defense to contend in the playoffs, and EITHER is possible to do in a draft.

You only sell out and rebuild when you have no chance at the playoffs or even a winning season. That is not where the Bears are right now. 28-20 over the last 3 seasons with 2 playoff appearances is not a lost cause, at least not yet.

What I am telling you is now is the time to sell because I believe that this upcoming year will prove that the Bears have no chance at the playoffs and the defense will fall off tremendously.

At which point all the value you have now will be gone.

I fully agree, which is why I can't fathom both being what they roll with come August. Certainly 1 will be dangled along with the haul they offer to trade up or take another shot at Watson/Wilson this summer. They've already admitted it ain't happening with Foles by getting Dalton.

There's chatterbatting about DEN being interested in Foles for some reason. It'd be great to get out of his gaur. $$.
Who the hell knows.

Dalton would be worth having if it meant getting rid of Foles. maybe. LOL

Not really true at all. The Bears are really the closest you'll find, and honestly they should've been way worse last year than they were.
