High school GPA unweighted: around 4.0(i have one B and a one A in an AP class, which in some settings is a 4.5....which means, yes, that it actually is weighted)
High school GPA weighted: 4.369(41/661)
ACT Composite:32
SAT:1980,1320(i took another one this october and i think i did alot better, particularly on math so fingers crossed i guess)
Extracurriculars:band,jazz band,church,track(freshman year),national honor society,etc.
Field of interest:Health technology or services(but this funnels into a lot of majors)
Degree interests: Biomedical engineering or sciences, some kind of pre-med program perhaps
College choices
Texas A&M
Pros:
Close to home, so while the lifestyle can change a bit with the college environment I still have my roots. I know A&M and the area around very, very well.
I know a good number of people that are either attending or thinking about attending, might help with socializing(though certainly, in some circumstances like A&M with an incredibly large student body, this could thought of as silly)
My dad is a professor there(probably wouldn't have his class, but that's something to fall back on)
Available for honors college and plenty of scholarships, in-state tuition..overall costs would probably be pretty low
I like A&M athletically
Cons:
Massive school=massive classes
Good Engineering school, but not exceptional;Overall a competitive university but not on the level of the others i am considering
Faculty are ok, less focused student-professor interactions
Decently funded, but not exceptionally(the building my dad moved from, which constitutes a side of Kyle Field, needs renovations)
Rick Perry is an idiot(if you dont get what i mean, i'm talking about his policies towards A&M funding and the Board of Regents)
Research is good, but limited undergrad opportunities
Chances of getting in: Automatic(ACT,SAT scores, and top 10% automatically qualify me, so long as i send in the application)
Application Status: Applying
University of Texas
Pros
In-state tuition with pending scholarships(will probably be a little more costly than A&M, but in-state helps)
Highly competitive school, but not crazy hard to get into
Great emphasis on pharmacy(important in terms of medicine)
Still relatively close to home
Good research base
Cons
Still have to deal with a large student body population
Not really a big UT fan
Facilities in some aspects are better than A&Ms, but not the best
Biomed program is pretty good(i mean, every school i'm applying to has a damn good biomed program), but it's not at the top
Maybe just my own stigma, but I never feel comfortable on campus
Chances of Getting in: Automatic admit(top 8% of class)
Application Status:Applying
Rice
Pros:
Self-contained campus, good student focus
Close to home, in a good part of Houston
Great faculty to student interaction
Great research opportunities
Great funding and great research facilities
Connection to Med School
Cons:
Incredibly competitive
Stricter in terms of organization(with programs and curriculum)
Not great in terms of job connections(unlike say Georgia Tech)
Money, money, money(financial aide would be key)
Not really a fan athletically of Rice
Chances of Getting In: I would say around 60-70%, but that's a blind estimate(that could be low, though)
Application Status:Applying
Duke
Pros
Great connection to med school
Great facilities
Less self contained than Rice, but still keeps a good "bubble environment"
Good student to faculty connections
Uh, ya, i'm kind of a duke fan
Cons
Incredibly competitive
Plenty of research opportunities, but may not be really structured
Incredibly expensive
Out of state, away from home(though I have relatives close by)
Chances of getting in:60-70%(same as rice, maybe rice a little higher, not sure)
Application Status:Applying
Georgia Tech
Pros:
One of the best, if not possibly the best, public engineering schools in the nation
Great facilities
Great connection to jobs,internships,etc.
Not necessarily self contained, but good student environment, and student-teacher focus is better than UT or A&M probably
Good developed and structured research programs
Cons
Out of state, in Atlanta(mind you, not in North so crime isn't that bad, but you do have to be wary at night. However, the worst crime on campus is probably larceny)
No great medical connections, biomed is more centered around biology
Pretty expensive because of out of state costs
Not really a fan of GT athletics
Chances of getting in:90-95%
Application Status:Applied(before early action)
Virgnia
Pros
Incredible backdrop for a college
Great faculty interaction,so it has some self-containing characteristics
Good facilities,good organization
Cons
Really more of a liberal arts school, engineering seems pretty isolated
Research has barely any structure on an undergraduate level
Certain engineering fields have a quota
Far away from home
Expensive
Not really a fan of virginia athletics
Chances of getting in:85-95%
Application Statusrobably not applying
Note I am not looking for people on this board to tell me which college that I should go to, but I like the outside perspectives.
If you guys want me to add any other information, then I can do so...i organized everything partly for my benefit as well
