RSL had secured a Champions League berth by qualifying for the MLS Cup, which they ultimately lost, but the USSF just changed the rules.

New qualifying system:

• MLS Cup Champions (Sporting Kansas City)
• Eastern Conference Best Record (New York Red Bulls)
• Western Conference Best Record (Portland Timbers)
• U.S. Open Cup Champions (D.C. United)
