Crazy Jim Gordon played on the origional. He was Clapton's drummer on the Layla album and Joe Cocker's drummer on Mad Dogs and Englishmen. He was the highest paid session drummer in the world. Stabbed his mother 38 times in 1983 and is still in jail today

Check out the drumming at 4:00

My Dad played drums in a band in the 50s and 60s.
He gave me a full set of Slingerlands when I was 8... I’ve played since.
I’ve admired guys like Bonham, Moon, Appice, Copland, paice....
Too many to mention.
The old guys like Rich and Nelson blow your mind.
Some are considered great because of the music their attached too.
Not taking anything away but my point is Ringo Star, Tommy Lee and many others make lists because of popularity.
Let’s face it... I’ve seen 14 year olds on YouTube that will never be known better than many.
At any rate... in my opinion for most of my life I believed Neal Peart was the best I’ve seen.
However... as I’ve gotten older I really believe a much less know guy named Michael Portnoy is with out doubt the most advanced drummer I’ve ever heard.
Granted this is based on my preference and simple opinion.
I’ve watched kids in Thailand blow my mind on every instrument for almost no pay.
I’d bet the best musicians that ever lived were never recorded.
My opinion of course.
If I had to pick I would have said Peart... I would now say Portnoy.
I guess it’s up to you.

Actually, I really admire this lunatic that plays through pages 10 and 11 of "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" for over an hour...

Seriously though, if you can play through that book at 200+ BPM you can do anything with a drum.

Mike Portnoy...

Live... like I said... most couldn’t name his band.

I like Portnoy. I've always respected Dream Theater but never really got into them much. I enjoy prog stuff a lot, just heavier. Between the Buried and Me is probably my favorite band and I like the style of their drummer, Blake Richardson.

I know Peart is a favourite for many, but when his name gets thrown about in threads like this, I have to make mention of Bill Bruford. Very different drummers. Peart is more of a composer, and out to impress. Bruford is more experimental, but both admire one another, and Bruford has been an influence on Peart.

A more modern session drummer, who is quite amazing, is Matt Chamberlain. Original drummer for Pearl Jam, toured with Edie Brickell, and has played with almost everybody. A master of the groove.

Another mention for the clock of the world, James Gadson.

By 1971 Jim Gordon had been the drummer for the legendary Mad Dogs and Englishmen, drummer for Clapton's Layla album and the highest paid session drummer in the world. Here he is in the famous song "Jump into the Fire". ten years later he stabbed his mother 38 times and is in jail today
