Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu.

A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "TRUCK."

Absolutely amazing!

I've had either a blackbird or a crow fly right into the grill of my van long ago (I think it was a blackbird since it was smaller). Saw feathers everywhere. Luckily it's carcass did not get stuck in the grill. Usually when birds are hit its because they didn't get out of the way in time or when they try to fly out of the way they go across traffic. This one flew head on into my van.

As for the joke, no booing or hissing, just a massive eye roll.

Another side note, I love crows and ravens because their intelligence. They're fascinating birds. They still creep me the **** out too and can also be annoying as hell. We had a murder of crows hanging out buy our house and when you went outside they'd all start cawing at the same time. Did not make for a peaceful environment. I do remember that after west nile hit Illinois pretty hard about 10 years ago they almost disappeared. We went a few years without seeing any in our neighborhood. It was eerily quiet during those summers. Now they're back in force. I even have a brown leucistic crow that visits our neighborhood. They're extremely rare so it was kind of cool to see.

I saw a two and a half foot tall hawk pecking at road kill on a two lane highway last fall. Traffic going 55 mph started coming at it and it just casually stepped onto the white line in between cars and waited for them to pass. It was crazy to watch. That bird didn't give two shits about the speeding cars whizzing by its head.

I hit a raccoon once and tore a chunk of it off that was stuck in the underside of the car for several days. Couldn't figure out why the dog was so interested in the car until it started stinking.
