The Cubs will designate lefty Phil Coke for assignment, Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com reports on Twitter. The move will likely occur officially tomorrow.

Coke, 32, made the club out of the spring after inking a minor league deal. His contract provided a $2.25MM big league salary. Coke has not managed to keep the runs off of the board with Chicago. Over 10 frames, he has permitted seven earned runs.

He does carry more promising peripherals: he has struck out nine and walked three, and carries a robust 63.6% groundball rate. Coke may have been somewhat unlucky to have permitted home runs on 20% of the flyballs hit off of him. That being said, his fastball velocity is down nearly a tick and a half from last year’s average.

Find this sort of surprising given the last paragraph. I figured they'd let him work things out. Apparently I was wrong. They also sent Schlitter back to Iowa to call up Lake and Wada

It came down to BAA. His was well over .300. Adding Wood to the pen put them at 4 lefties. And that is over kill. Coke was the worst of them and became the odd man out.

If this team was not winning games I doubt they would have ate that contract. With games mattering it makes sense to make moves geared to win. Thus Wood to the pen.

If anything this shows that they may (ok will most likely) add a SP at the deadline. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they bump Schwarber up to AAA with the intention of getting his bat into the line up for the post season run.

Happy to see Schlitter gone again. Hopefully Wood can become a valuable piece in the pen

I worry about Wood being a flyball pitcher. Zero value of being able to get out a tough LHH and hold a runner.
