Was not expecting Chapman and Putnam. Not sure why they didn't just waive Chapman and Putnam earlier.

What's the procedure at this point? Are they true free agents or are they subject to waivers?

#Cubs tender Garza, Samardzija, Russell, Valbuena. Non-tender list includes Stewart, Putnam & Chapman. Roster now at 37

Free agents. Brett at BN speculated that Putnam and Chapman might have had the right to refuse the assignment to the minors which is why they were just non-tendered. The Cubs will probably try to resign Putnam and Chapman to minor league deals at least and maybe Stewart.

Yeah this.

I hope they figure out a way to resign Chapman, he has intriguing stuff.

I'm thinking about doing a progress report on all the guys that were acquired via deadline trades. I have the names in an excel database, I just need to figure out how I want to track the names.

The Rockies win the trade if Colvin and LeMahieu continue to be useful at Coors AND away from Coors, and if you assume Ian Stewart won't be re-signed and that he'd suck even if he were to stick around. As of now, though, the Rockies come out ahead.

No they won the trade, but the question is how much did they win the trade. If Colvin's production remains tied to Coors then it was a pretty small win.

Stewart has two years of cost control left, so if he can be re-signed and he produces, I think it can be salvaged. I am in agreement that as of now, the Rockies won the trade.

screw winning the trade, I'd rather Stewart not see the field in a Cubs uni again.

Dude was promising at one time . They took a calculated risk and lost . I can understand them thinking the wrist would heal well enough with an entire off season , but the thing that turned me off about Stewart was that he just didn't really seem to care . Maybe I'm reading it wrong but I just never saw any fire in his eyes .
And I never would have traded LeMahieu . I always saw some Ryno in him and I think he's gonna turn into a pretty good player . All he needs is the at bats cuz once he gets his feet under him , I think he's gonna turn it loose . We're gonna regret that trade .

Theo and Hoyer have 3 more years , imo , before I expect to see some results . Not 1st place results but a climb back to respectability (like a solid 3rd place) and with the dial pointing upwards , and everybody in baseball knows it's just a matter of time till they're contending . That doesn't happen by yr 5 then it's time to re-evaluate .

They will have a much harder path than previously. No more free spending in the draft or international signings plus a thinner free agent pool. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs still sucked in five years, just with a much better foundation in place.
