This topic has been discussed on different threads, figured id give it its own. .

This is a hot topic cause everyone trying to guess who maddon going to go with for that 1 game WC or who should pitch..
either the 155 mil. FA you brought in for these games or the team best pitcher this year. .

Here what Maddon looking at...

Whoever starts the WC game will only get 1 start ( game 3 ) in the NLDS
While the other will start game 1 or either game 4 on 3 days rest or game 5 with 5 days rest...

So, he needs to decide not only who gives him best chance to win the WC game but which of the 2 would he rather have pitching twice and in the 4th or 5th game of of 5 game series. ..

The bummer of all this is the Cubs are desperately going to need Hammel to figure it out by the NLDS because he could get 2 starts , game 2 and what could be a very important game 4 or 5...

My choice would be going with Arrieta in the WC game against the Pirates because the Cardinals struggle against LHers and i think Lester having playoff experience and pitched great in the playoffs would probably fair better against them in that situation.. being a lefty and with the playoff pressure experience against a team with playoff experience.

we have to go with Arrieta because it's an all or nothing game, we have to put everything we have in that game regardless of the NLDS, yes we need Hammel at his best but that's ok, if we want to win it all we need everybody at their best

I think the choice has been made that it's going to be Arrieta.

That's probably how it will play out....a lot people would like to see Arietta available for more than one game against the Cards. He will be. I remember what Beckett did to the Cubs in 2003....admittedly a 7 game series instead of a 5 but still. I think Maddon will use who he needs to use to get the job done. You might just see Lester and Arietta in the same game. Let's hope it gets that far.

Tough call, one that maddon has been very silent on

More importantly...who will start at 1b in a potential wild card game? Seems like giving rizzo a day off for a possible nlds would do him wonders......think bryant could make his 1st start there in the wc game?

And if you lose that game you just benched your MVP-caliber 1B for a game to save him for a non-existent next round.

I think its known that it will be Arrieta. The other day they said about a one game playoff and Jake said he will be ready. Complete confidence he will start it and I don't think Maddon would think twice. Jake is having the greatest second half of a season for a pitcher ever. Not being a cub fan, by stats ever.

Yeah, not a tough call. You go with your best pitcher with the ERA under 2! It is a one game elimination you dance with who brung ya. Everything else will sort itself out.

Cubs should rest Rizzo against the Brew Crew.

Cubs should rest Rizzo against the Brew Crew.

The next three games should clear things up a bit. Cubs lose 2 of them, there'll be a lot of mixing and matching while everyone gets breather....Cubs sweep them...it's status quo.

Because of the doubleheaders, the rotation got switched up a a bit since last week...Arrieta has 3 starts left..

Now Arrieta is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday against Milwaukee, Monday against KC, and the last Saturday against Milwaukee. .. So unless playoff position is wrapped up and they can skip his start on that Saturday or limit his pitches, Arrieta will only have 3 days rest before WC game. ..

My only guess to readjust the rotation would be if Maddon uses the off day next Thursday and have Arrieta pitch the Sunday game against the Pirates instead of Monday against KC. Then his last start will be Friday against Milwaukee and he will have a regular 4 days rest before the WC game..

All this will be tied into what the standings look like. If they got a good chance to catch the Cardinals, I think he'll maximize Areitta's starts and maybe take a chance of him not being available in the play-in game. But if it's just for getting the play-in game at home....I doubt he'd risking losing him for that game.

These 2 games against the Cardinals will determine if they have an outside shot at catching them, they obviously need to win both for that to happen. .

I do think they would like to catch the pirates and play that game at home, which is why i think he will adjust the rotation next weekend and have both Lester and Arrieta face the Pirates.

Not really.. if all stays the same , it would be Hammel turn to pitch with 4 days rest on that Wednesday. ..

Arrieta will need to start next week Sunday instead of what would be his next turn on Monday to fall back into the norm to be ready to pitch the WC game. .
