With Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster being traded and Matt Garza being placed on the DL, the Cubs called up southpaw Brooks Raley from Triple A Iowa last night and will be making his Major League debut tonight against the San Diego Padres. Raley was the Cubs 6th round pick in 2009 out of Texas A&M and has shown success on the mound

Raley who is 24, started off this year in Tennessee with the Smokies and started 8 games going 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 48.2 innings of work with 12 walks and 29 strikeouts. He was then called up to Iowa where he has started 14 games and despite being 4-8, his ERA is 3.62 with 28 walks and 69 strikeouts in 82 innings of work.

Put those numbers together and he is 6-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 103.2 innings pitched with 40 walks, 98 strikeouts and has limited opponents to a .267 average. In his last 10 starts in Iowa, he has thrown at least 5 innings in each start but with a record of 2-7. That look is deceiving because he has been hit hard in only 2 of those starts and has 8 starts of allowing 3 or less runs and 5 of them have been quality starts. In a span of 8 straight starts prior to his last start in Iowa, he has allowed 13 runs(9 earned).

Good luck tonight Brooks!

Raley is 24. He is an athletic kid that will probably remind us a lot of Travis Wood to be honest. He stands on the left side of the rubber and can hit 93 with his four seamer. But more often than not will sit in the high 80s with a two seamer. Has a bunch of pitches with a curve, slider, cutter, 2 seam, 4 seam and change. The FO is apparently high on the kid, but his upside is a back end of the rotation guy (maybe 4th starter).

Ialled it about a week ago. When people were saying it will be Coleman or Rusin. I knew it by their starts at Triple A.

Shoot thanks for the heads up. By the looks of it, he basically throws junk pitches that will sometimes go faster than expected. I like those kind of pitchers

He has some nice movement on his pitches and he did see a spike in his k/9 when he reached AAA. I've heard that his slider is the best pitch (TWood it is the changeup), but I really think it is going to be a similar type of pitcher we see.

Yeah from what I've hard about Raley, he won't overpower you. He's not your typical strikeout pitcher, but he does have good movement on his more off speed pitches. I'm just happy that we don't have to see Coleman and watch a young kid throw.

meh Coleman's problem is control, which I think it may have something to do with that body twisting motion of his. He's also young still and I think if he got his act together, he could really turn out to be a surprise but that's just me. Most likely if he even makes the Cubs roster again, he'll be a 1 inning or 1 batter middle reliever

I agree, but Coleman isn't exactly old at 25 either.

I'm interested to see how he does. At this point, the Cubs have a handful of back-end of the rotation guys who could possibly anchor the bullpen in the future. I'd love to see this guy come up and light up the league, but that's a bit too optimistic to believe. At the very least, he's filler for now. Anything more is a bonus.

Raley has a shot to be more than filler. He has a shot at being a guy you can give the ball to every fifth day. It doesn't mean that he will be consistent or exceptional, but there aren't 150 people that can handle that spot. Raley could be much much worse than that though too. It will be interesting to see, but I am glad that the best pitcher in Iowa this season is finally getting rewarded.
