Cubs Sign Alfredo Amezaga

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs have signed utilty man Alfredo Amezaga to a minor league deal. He will not be added to the 40 man-roster as it’s a minor league deal. Amezaga can play all over the field – SS, 2B, 3B and the OF. However, he will have to have one heck of Spring Training to make the Cubs opening day roster. But if Amezaga stays with the Cubs in the minors, he could be a useful injury replacement.

Amezaga is currently playing shortstop for Obregon in Mexican League playoffs.

Amezaga is a 33-year old switch hitter. During his 9 year stint in the majors, Amezaga has a career .247 average, 12 home runs, 110 runs batted in and has stole 49 bases. Amezaga was drafted by the then call Anaheim Angels in 1999 and made his major league debut on May 24th, 2002 with the Angels. Amezaaga has not been with a lot of teams, but has bounced around the league – he has played for the Florida Marlins (2 stints), Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies (2 stints).

As you probably know, this signing is not big and cannot hurt the Cubs. This is how I see it… minor league deals could be a big win or a “oh well.. we tried!” kind of scenario.
