Oh, they always have a choice. Feldman had good peripherals and is switching to the inferior league and a less hitter-friendly park. It's a solid signing for the money.

Could be both. Feldman started and relieved last year for the Rangers. Scott Baker recovering from Tommy John, a bunch of guys getting stretched out in the minors (depends on if you like seeing Raley and Rusin again as well  ), Travis Wood not exactly guaranteed a spot even though he's the de facto #3 at this point. And Marcum and McCarthy are still available. I doubt the Cubs throw the piggy bank at Greinke as they wouldn't have signed Black Friday pitchers if they were serious about it, but I do think guys like Marcum and McCarthy could still be in play, but on the not-as-likely side.

Heyman likes it, I'm a fan of it.

If you're going to take a chance on a mediocre SP I can think of more expensive options than Feldman.

Not a bad signing. Certainly could do worse for a 4th or 5th starter. Plus, he gives us the flexibility to act as a long reliever or spot starter if we decide to keep making moves for the starting rotation. I'd still like us to make a run at McCarthy or Marcum.

I usually take Heyman's opinions with a huge grain of salt :D

But I like the signing.

Generally I don't like to spam my site, but here are a few quotes I pulled and posted about Scott Feldman before he hit FA and after.

I think they're generally hoping that he maintains good control and keeps the ball on the ground and off of Waveland. With an improved defense that could lead to many outs. Outs = lower ERA = trade him to some desperate team in July. That's the plan, but as you well know, plans don't often work out as intended.

I like both Baker and Feldman, add McCarthy or Marcum and the rotation should be set. Trade Garza, Marmol, Vitters and cash to KC for Moustakas, and Collins. They get a front line starter for their rotation, a new closer, cash to pay the majority of their salaries, Vitters to do whatever they want to with, while we get our 3B issues solved with a good young talent, and a pretty good LHP for the bullpen, with the ability to possibly close. Sign or trade for a decent to good CF and this team next year will be improved, with a few more good young building blocks in place to go along with Rizzo and Castro. by midseason if we're too far back, trade Marcum and Baker for more young prospects.

Hmm. Is that package enough to land Moustakas? I like the underlying thinking (get Moustakas) but I don't think they will go for what you proposed, especially if Garza is coming back from injury.
