This was posted in the rumors forum thread but yes, in order to maximize return you have to consider the salary as a sunk cost and use that as an incentive for the other team to give more back.

Oh no, I get the strategy -- just the first I've heard of using it w/ Dempster. Soriano, Soto, yeah...but just first time I've heard it w/ him.

Olney didn't have to say this, I knew it. To me it was obvious and knew they would.

theres a 1000 ways that "picking up salary" can go when it comes to the return. they go quanity in spects or quality. if a gm gets fleeced on this, that gm should be fired. epstein is basically buying spects.....he better buy a lot. i disagree with that philosophy, the aramis deal are the deals that help you rebuild, not guys that arent mlb proven unless he buys a lot. after demp and garza....what else is left on this team that helps you build a farm system? cubs dont have much to trade on the 40 man. lahair, soriano, marmol dont get shit back. i guess thats why most fans and analysts have this team on a 5 year plan. ps.....please please people stop with the theoisms...please.

He isn't just buying spects. The team were trading with gets Dempster who has been playing at an all star level. If he could just buy Zach Lee and other top spects w/o trading Dempster I'm sure it would of already been done. Teams don't buy players in this day in age like the golden days. The Dodgers aren't cheapskates they aren't gonna just sell top spects.

I'm tired of arguing about what Dempster is worth. I just want to see the haul.

Christ, just trade the guy, already. We'll get more trading him now than whatever pick we'd acquire by offering him arbitration at the end of the year, anyway.

With our luck, they'll wait one start too long and he'll blow out his elbow :obama:

Who cares if the Cubs eat the contract. They are going to "eat" the contract if they can't trade him anyways. Might as well eat the money they'd be paying anyways and get something for the future.

Talk about an non-issue.

If the Cubs trade with a level-headed GM they aren't going to get anything too awesome back for Dempster even if they did pay all his remaining salary. The return would basically be what we would call "serviceable"

If the Cubs trade with a desperate GM though, the game changes and we don't really know what to expect.

I think that has less to do with silly fandom and more to do with what the Cubs are trying to get in return, whether realistic or otherwise.
