Vinny Del Negro never played in the Finals, but he once was the fourth-leading scorer on a team that posted the NBA's best record.

The 1994-95 San Antonio Spurs had a strong connection to the Bulls because of a certain bleach-blond, publicity-seeking rebound machine.

After finishing 62-20, those Spurs lost in the Western Conference finals to Houston while Dennis Rodman frequently sat on the bench with his shoes off.

The following summer, Rodman was traded for Will Perdue, became a national hero (or antihero) with the Bulls, and the rest is history.

"I enjoyed playing with Dennis, because I enjoyed shooting and he enjoyed rebounding," Del Negro said Friday. "So it worked out well."

Everything turned out fine for the Spurs franchise, which drafted Tim Duncan two years later. The Spurs with Rodman didn't quite live happily ever after, for whatever reason.

"Dennis is a different type of guy, but I never had any issues with him," Del Negro said. "I loved playing with him. He definitely brought a different dynamic to your team when he was on it.

"We knew there were going to be some issues with Dennis. But we were such a veteran team, we were focused in on what we needed to do. We just wanted to win, and we knew Dennis helped us win."

True, during his two years in San Antonio, Rodman led the league in rebounds by a ridiculously wide margin. He finished more than 4 rebounds ahead of second-place Shaquille O'Neal (1994) and Dikembe Mutombo ('95).

The other key players on that Spurs team were David Robinson, Sean Elliott, Avery Johnson, Chuck Person, Terry Cummings, Doc Rivers and J.R. Reid.

Age may have been a bigger issue with that roster than Rodman's distractions.

Of course, if Rodman and the Spurs had been able to coexist peacefully, the Bulls' dynasty might have had a different ending.

"Who knows? Probably," Del Negro said. "Things happen for a reason. You never know what the next year is going to bring."

I don't know if he specifically had a problem with Robinson, but it fits given how much of a disciplinarian and straight arrow Robinson was relative to Rodman.

I know he had all kinds of issues towards his end there. It would have been interesting had San Antonio won a title with Rodman, because you wonder how the Bulls would have done without him.

Robinson is a big religious guy and I bet he didn't agree with how Rodman lived his life.

I remember him not getting along with Robinson. Rodman talked about in his book "Bad As I Wanna Be."

He also didn't get along with the coach Bob Hill.

Rodman got a lot of grief for taking off his shoes during the West Finals in 1995. A lot of attention was drawn to that, and not to the fact that the MVP (David Robinson) got completely lit up by Hakeem Olajuwon in that series. Rosman was pissed abut that, that he got the blame for that series and he thought it should of been Robinson.

I remember in the book Rodman said that Robinson would complain to Dennis that he needed help on Hakeem, and Rodman said something like "the MVP shouldn't need help.".

Bob Hill was never a real good coach, had he been they could have put Rodman on Hakeem.

As I recall the backup plan was to sign Jayson Williams that year. The primary reason why the Bulls chose to go with Rodman was financial. But if they didn't get him they would have signed Williams, who had the same strengths as Rodman, second in the league in rebounding at the time. So the Bulls would have been just fine.

I remember that. I think Williams wanted more money than the Bulls wanted to offer and then they got Rodman.

Re:Del Negro looks back on days with unique teamma

Here's a story on the Williams negotiations.

Nets' Williams Priced Himself Off the Bulls
Chicago Sun-Times - Sunday, October 22, 1995
Author: Lacy J. Banks
Jayson Williams , the first power forward Michael Jordan lobbied for the Bulls to sign, said he might have bid himself out of signing with the Bulls .

Williams said if he had not asked for a five-year, $15 million contract, he could have persuaded the Bulls to sign him before they examined other options and acquired Dennis Rodman.

Instead, Williams re-signed with the New Jersey Nets for $7 million over three years, the last of which is the club's option. And Williams barely got that.

"Negotiations got a little nasty at times," he said. "I mean, they took all the bones out of my closet. I never knew I was such a bad guy. I felt like I needed an exorcism and was sorry I missed the pope."

Williams said that when the Bulls gave him a four-hour psychological test, he felt cool, calm and collected.

"Then the next day, what did they do?" he said. "They traded for Dennis Rodman. Hey, I might be a little crazy. But I'm not as crazy as Rodman. Four hours I take the test, and the next day they get Dennis. I wonder how I really did. I've got to ask Jerry Krause the next time I see him."

I also recall Michael was said to have called Jayson on the phone and told him something like, "I can guarantee you at least two titles if you sign here." At the time it seemed very likely that the Bulls were going to sign him, the Rodman trade talks were completely under the radar.

I can gurantee you we dont win 72 wins and 3 titles. We would have won one against Seattle and lost both to the Jazz had we gotten that far in 97 and 98. Jayson would have never been able to stop the likes of Alonzo, Karl, Shaq etc. Dennis had a way of defending them well and getting in their heads. Thank God that didnt happen.

Who would have though back than that in 2009 Dennis Rodman would be considered sane compared to Jayson Williams

So I am playing around with some of the Admin stuff and I went in and clicked members, and then clicked "manage validating members" and one is listed. So I clicked on it to check it out not knowing what this magical place was. It's a new register with an ip address that resolves to

hosted-by.altushost.comThe reason I bring this up is that it seemed shady so I googled it and it's a European host who's description on google is:

ALTUSHOST INC. - We build the future! We do allow all types of content except child porn and spam(related) websites, our servers are located in Europe,

no reason to use them unless they are up to no good. I imagine that this is a registration bot type person. I would suggest we ban them and the IP. Also, if possible see if anyone else has their ip address resolve to .altushost.com.

Just a topic for discussion.

So ban it. I think anything questionable should be automatically taken care of.

I banned him and the IP, I don't think we want anyone else coming from that place. Not that it's European because I love them Euros, but it seems real shady.

I agree bringing it up but that was pretty clear.

Oh, since we are bringing things up this is what I sent to fuffle.....

"Just so you know it was Ttunez fucking with yours and everyone else's +/-. I am going to give the benefit of doubt that you did not have anything to do with it.

He has been banned and will be banned every time he creates a new account that we can find. Not sure if he was trying to make you look bad, or you are him, but regardless you are not effected by his ban.

Just thought you should know."

I did not get a reply but in case he was in on the BS, he now knows, we know. He did read it.
