Muskat tweeted that Dempster has been scratched and that Coleman will be starting in his place tomorrow.

If true that would mean that all 5 Cubs SP have missed at least one start this year, and destroys any chance of moving Dempster in the process.

Chris Carpenter doesn't have the stamina to go five innings anyway. If all of your starters have missed time so far this season and you don't have as much pitching depth as you would have hoped anyway, it's not like you have much of a choice.

Not that I wanted him to start, but if he's the closer of the future, I think he should stay up in the majors. Move may make sense for now, but I don't see how it helps the Cubs to have scrubs like Lopez, Davis and Ortiz getting starts. Mateo should be get a start after the outing he had Thursday.

To put it in the proper perspective, Mateo was pitching against the Giants' pretty inept offense. Lopez also just had a great start, albeit against an inept White Sox offense.

Carpenter doesn't have stamina. He also has major control issues. If he's to be a setup man, you take a look at the Cubs' offense, which is as inept as the ones just stated, and you realize that there is really nothing to set up. Plus Kerry Wood is still on the team and they're not going to release him.

How much do you really think it would matter anyway? We're past the halfway point, and the Cubs can't seem to get within single digit games of first place. Sure we could use a miracle, but the Cubs have nothing of value that they seem willing to trade for. The minors are full of pitchers who are borderline but probably nowhere as good as the guys who are on the MLB staff. The ones who are available to be picked up are probably retreads and trash that no other team wants at the moment. Freaking out about James Russell getting starts when the team was still within spitting distance of .500 is one thing, but at this point, we're pretty much in the midst of garbage time and we'd just hope for guys who can eat innings. We're closer to the #1 draft pick than we are to a playoff spot anyway.

There's plenty of season left for guys to come up. When the rosters expand later in the year and the Cubs are 20-25 games under .500, anyone with potential will be coming up and getting a shot at some playing time.

Jay Jackson had a decent outing last night for Iowa. If he can string together a few more together, he might earn a call up like Casey Coleman, who was great in AAA.

McNutt had a bad outing last night, but apparently was really strong through the first four innings and lost it when he went out for the fifth. Apparently he is still building the arm strength up. McNutt getting back on track and finishing the season strong is perhaps one of the most important storylines for this team heading into next year. Him and Cashner are the biggest variable at the backend of the rotation that could make this rotation anywhere from terrible, like this year, or actually well above average.
