Do you consider American Cheese to be real Cheese?

I am having a Turkey/Ham/Cheese sandwich and I was asked "What kind of cheese" and I said "American" and I was told American Cheese is not cheese.

I think if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck.... it can run for Congress..... or be considered cheese.

What do you guys think?

well, I don't think it's cheese. It's simulacra. I don't have any problem with people knowing my opinion on this either. Just hope it doesn't result in a 3 day ban.

same stuff though, made with some sort of powdered cheese processing bi-product that is for the most part imported from China, hence the name "American Cheese"

While my "Food Snob" label would probably lead you to believe that I do not consume this product, EVER, this actually is not the case. I will indulge when it is placed on a nice medium rare beef patty, as there is really not another "cheese" product that replicates the mouthfeel of American Cheese on a burger.

There's also something about it in grilled cheese form that also makes it somewhat palatable. Would still prefer real cheese in both scenarios, but American will do

Actually I would have to agree with this. If SUPER FRESH, it's almost identical in texture to Chinese Cheese. Not rep-farming!!

Agreed. But I use pepper jack for nearly everything cus I like the little extra kick it gives.

I think Cheddar is also an American type of cheese. When I was stationed in Germany and whenever I've visited my wife I see Gouda and possibly Swiss, but I've never seen Cheddar anywhere other than a Commissary or mini-PX.
