Murphy has been traded to the Rangers according to Jerry Crasnick. Guessing that opens a spot for Kalish to make the team.

Cubs reporters are now saying it is just a waiver claim. Either way Donnie Murphy is off the Cubs 25/40 man rosters and is in Texas now.

George Kottaras is being cut as well. John Baker and Mike Olt making the roster seem like locks now. Maybe Ryan Roberts or Ryan Kalish as well.

@ESPNChiCubsDonnie Murphy being claimed by Texas Rangers paves the way for Olt to make the team. Emergence of him and Bonifacio gave Cubs flexibility

@TheCCORT @MLBBruceLevine: Scout source tells me Cub Catcher George Kottaras has cleared outright waivers and has been put on release waivers

I wonder if Coghlan can still play 3B? I'd rather have him on the big-league roster than Roberts...

So:
13 roster spots

IF:
Olt, Valbuena, Barney, Castro, Rizzo, Bonifacio

OF:
Sweeney, Lake, Schierholtz, Ruggiano

C:
Castillo, Baker

1 spot open unless they decide to carry 1 extra arm. I'm leaning towards Kalish here. He has deserved a spot.

Id expect it to be Kalish too but just wondering if they'd prefer to have someone who can play both IF/OF. Not sure if they'd be comfortable with 1 UI, if that the case then Coghlan will get the nod.

Doubt it. Baker getting nod as a NRI was due to performance this spring. He won the job. Same with Boni and Olt. Kalish put up a .275/.370/.300 vs Cog: .231/.286/.308.

Olt covers 1st/3B. Bon covers 2B/SS/CF. Sweeney put up .119/.159/.119. He is under a 3 year deal but I wouldn't feel good going into the season with that pile of crap line. Thus Kalish becomes insurance.
