Apparently a young Emperor Penguin like the ones in March of the Penguins got lost off the coast of Antarctica and swam 2,000 miles to New Zealand. They think he was following food and somehow got disoriented. He is a juvenile so I think maybe he got high and lost.

Just an update on our penguin friend. Happy Feet as he's been named got surgery to remove the sand from his stomach. After rehabilitating he is on a research vessel heading for Antarctica. They are going to release him on the way.

I thought they did that a while ago, at least the medical treatment. Originallt they were just going to let nature take it's course but as news spread it would have turned into a P.R. nightmare if the hadn't done anything to try to save the bird. From what I've seen on the NPR website there's a similar thing going on with some cow in Germany that escaped just prior to being butchered that's been on the lamb hiding in the woods like Johnny Rambo.
