The running rhetorical joke about the corruption in Detroit has been; If the basic municipal services aren't getting paid, where is all of the tax money going?

There are parts of that city even I won't walk around, and I've strolled down many alleys in the heart of Chicago's west side. Half the cars in Detroit don't even have license plates, and the cops don't care. Unlike Chicago, punks in Detroit will try and rob you for a pair of shoes.

I've been to Detroit once. I went with my dad to a Tigers game (we used to do a baseball trip every summer before he got laid off in '08) and I'll always remember the drive back to the hotel. The car in front of us had no license plate, no back window and the buildings we drove by were abandoned with probably 75% of the windows gone/shot out. We also heard some gun shots in the distance. It was quite the experience

That sums it up well, and since all of the law-abiding citizens have long since moved away...mine as well just bulldoze the entire city and turn it into a park or something.

Detroit does have its problems, but at the same time Cleveland, Baltimore, Camden, Newark and Gary all experience similar issues. I give credit to Detroit for starting to improve. It's going to be a long climb, but they're finally headed in the right direction, at least by bringing in new businesses and developing the city's core.
