After non-tendering Koyie Hill, #cubs have some interest in long-time #redsox Jason Varitek. His CERA last year: 3.57.

#Cubs are also checking out Tim Wakefield. In both cases, nothing seems imminent and interest could end if they acquire other guys.

varitek as a back up is good to have.

wakefield is just a guy. not a pitcher who will solidify a rotation and make the team a contender.

Varitek as a backup would be solid

Varitek only makes sense if he can coach Soto.

Not sure Wake will leave Boston. I know he really wants to have the franchise wins record.

If the Cubs did get him he's a great clubhouse guy. Can spot start, come out of the pen, etc. Versatile arm. Nice weapon to have for a team.

Tek is what he is. Can't throw people out at all. Could spot start at catcher. Another awesome clubhouse guy. Something this team needs a lot of if they keep clowns like Z and Soriano.

If we sign Varitek and call up Wellington Castillo it could open us up for a trade of Soto for pitching.

Hasn't Wakefield always had a personal catcher? It's not worth it to bring in a specialized catcher or having one learn for a guy who would stay one season.

Not always.

Mirabelli caught him most of the time when he was in Boston but since Mirabelli left Wake hasn't really had the same deal.

Didn't Bard also catch him? I thought I remember them re-acquiring him from SD after no one on their roster could effectively catch Wakefield. I could be wrong.

EDIT: Should have looked it up before posting. Bard was the one who couldn't catch Wakefield so they re-acquired Mirabelli... whoops.

Wakefield would be a very solid addition to the team for the very reason FT said. He is a guy that is capable of filling multiple roles. He can start the year in the pen as long reliever and get moved into the rotation when someone goes down. Wakefield isn't a difference maker, but he is a guy that might help prevent us from having to watch guys like Doug Davis pitch again.
