I don't know if I'd go that far. Everyone has stolen from old blues artists so that argument isn't exactly valid. Being original or not, to me, isn't what makes a band great. They need to be entertaining most of all. If I listen to a song and my feet start tapping and my head starts moving I consider that great

Paul and John as the fire and ice in terms of the writing I think ends up being the most talented 'beatle'. Clapton is a great player. The black man that was stolen from actually originates from West African field chants that were brought to America with slavery. There are recordings of those field chants where you can see much the origin of a lot of the phrasing, harmonies, and rhythmic cadences that revealed themselves in african-american field chants, gospel hymns, delta 'blues' and so on and so forth. So the black man stole from the black man who stole from the black man...it is like a serpent that eats his own tail. It never ends - and won't. Those elements from those West African field chants are still relevant in music today. We can turn on the radio and therefore say - Eddie Vedder stole from the "black man", Maroon 5 stole from the "black man" etc.
If there is one actual man who has had such a direct influence on the actual construction of western music - whether pop, rock, ragtime, metal etc - it would be Bach. So much originates from his approach to harmony and melody and their relationship with one another.
