Alot of the Bears comments related to Johnson sounds mostly like BS

Everybody loved him
We couldn't believe he was still available
He was our target
Blah blah blah

If all that's true, why did they risk losing him by trading down from r4p1 to r4p13???

Clearly they were fine with anyone else taking him in those 12 picks and actually had the night the think/sleep on it and came to the conclusion that the trade down offer was better than just picking him with r4p1

None of the teams above them were picking a running back. Or at least, it was highly unlikely they would. So they took a gamble. Only real risk was someone trading up. Why is that so hard to believe?

Well.....if "they couldn't believe he was there" then it means they thought someone would take him or trade up for him within those 12 picks

I think they were surprised he was there in the 4th. Every team behind them was set at running back. They took a calculated gamble. They didn't need a running back. Maybe they were surprised he was there after trading down. Doesn't mean they weren't excited to draft him. Both things can be true.

"After running countless simulations, the Bears felt there was no way the running back would be available after the 3rd round. So when he fell to the 4th, it seemed like a gift from the football gods."

The cost of trading up on day 3 is usually pretty cheap so just analyzing the 12 teams between r4p1 and r4p13 is naive.....I just don't think they valued him pre draft as much as they're touting/valuing now and their draft day actions speak to that. If they did value him so much and couldn't believe he was there on day 3; they'd just have pulled the trigger r4p1 and been done with it. The way it played out its obvious they were fine with risking losing out on him in those 12 picks...they got lucky he was still there 13 picks later.
