Three words buddy FRANK EDWARD THOMAS.

Better than anything the Cubs ever had.....and that includes Mr. Cub.

Simply the best hitter in Chicago baseball history. A close second would be Shoeless Joe.

The only thing that stinks is the rotting corpse of the Northside baseball club...because they're dead to me.

Best Chicago Baseball Player EVER

It is an interesting argument between Ernie Banks and Frank Thomas. However, I hope you aren't trying to directly compare the offensive numbers of a 1B/DH in one of the most hitter friendly eras in baseball to a SS/1B that played in one of the most pitcher friendly eras in baseball.

The era was viewed as hitter friendly because all of the hitters were juicing. Hindsight is 20/20. It wasn't that the pitching was any worse during that era it's that the hitters gave themselves an illegal advantage. Thomas WAS NOT one of those players.

You had some of the best pitchers EVER during Thomas' era. Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Roger Clemens (who was also a juicer), Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, David Cone, Mike Mussina, Pedro Martinez etc. etc etc.

Ernie Banks played half of his games in one of the most hitter friendly ballparks (if not the most hitter friendly) in baseball history. And before you say US Cellular field was also hitter friendly, it didn't gain that distinction until after the renovations in the early and mid 2000's.

This is a joke. ESPN is not a serious enough organization to be deciding anything that is or isn't hall of fame.

And you think only the hitters were juicing? And Banks also played virtually his whole career with the higher pitching mound. Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Robin Roberts, etc. say hello as well. The point remains that you can't just look at the offensive numbers of the two and go well Thomas had a higher BA/OBP/SLG and more HRs therefore he is clearly the better player without factoring defensive position and era.

It's just my opinion. It doesn't mean that it's right. And you are absolutely right, you really can't compare players from different eras.

Comparing Banks and Thomas is just like comparing Ruth and Pujols. Apples and oranges.

With that said, at the very least Thomas should be in the same sentence with Ernie Banks. Instead of there being three Bears in the inagural albeit make-believe ESPN Chicago Sports HOF, there should be at least one White Sox player (Thomas) and one Blackhawk (Hull or Mikita)

And that's not to say that there has to be at least one representative from every team. It's saying that there are players from other teams/sports that are just as deserving.

I agree with that it is comparing apple to oranges which was the point I was trying to make. I wouldn't dismiss the argument out of hand, but I just think you have to take into account that Banks was leading the league in HRs as a SS which was unheard of at the time. Thomas definitely belongs in the conversation since his 1991-1997 is absolutely ridiculous in terms of offensive numbers.
