Hawks get grittier as free agency opens - Chicago Blackhawks Blog - ESPN Chicago
Jesse Rogers has a good comparison to the players we just signed and the ones who played the same roles on the 2010 Cup team.
Brunette=Ladd
Carcillo=Burish
Mayers=Eager
Montador=Sopel
While not exact matches player-for-player, these comparisons are still valid.
What do you think?
I think about what I usually think of Rogers- that it is amazing that he gets paid for such
crack analysis.
Seriously, does this guy actually even follow hockey?
I replied to the comparison in another thread... completey off his nut.
Plus I don't actually think that Mayers compares to Madden, in that Madden actually was a 3rd line centre for a good deal of 2009-10, and I doubt Mayers could handle that. A good guy to have if you need to win a critical draw... but Madden was a much more all around player (presumably still is).
Montador is a hell of a lot better than Sopel... no offense to Brent but he was basically a washed up mobile defenseman that had made some adjustments to his game... not particularly mobile, not particularly effective -basically you #6 guy .. 2 years ago... He's also probably significantly better than Campoli who is pretty much one dimensional, and even at that he has had consistency issues over the course of his career. Mind you, I'd still take him ... as I think he can overcome those still. Monte.. has more offensive upside than Hjalmarsson, and Leddy is too young to actually compare.
That being said -it is more of a statement about the relative depth of the defenseman position on the team than anything else.

I don't think he was doing that at all, but rather instead deciding not to go with the American Idol approach to hockey by playing every 20 something kid that came along until they got voted off of the rink.
I think the 4th line today is much improved over last seasons, and arguably 2009-10. Aside from Eager, that was a bunch of guys that were fairly young and thrown out there, mostly generic guys that basically were interchangable with each other. Eager, excepted only in that he had bounced around the league a little more than the other guys... and mind you, I never have thought too highly of 55 as I never worked out his actual purpose on the team. I suppose it was because he played for (relatively) cheap.... he sure fit in well with the generic guys on the 4th line- which is more like he wasn't particularly effective at anything -frankly none of them were. They were there (like most teams' 4th lines) -to give the other 3 lines a breather -and hopefully not screw anything up.
I mean "much improved" in the sense that basically you can dress a line that resembles the Hanson Brothers now, in terms of overall purpose. Which is not something that you could even identify in years past.
