Hernandez would cost Brett Jackson, Josh Vitters, Trey McNutt, Rafael Dolis and Chris Carpetner. Something like that and it's not worth it. Even though I like King Felix A LOT.
You wold trade that and more to get the "King." He's that much of a difference maker.
I was thinking the same thing. Brett Jackson is going to be a very good outfielder but he's not likely to be a star. Vitters has yet to put it all together at the plate or in the field (the former being disappointing given how "advanced" he was supposed to be for a high school hitter). McNutt isn't a high level prospect and there's debate whether Dolis is a starter or reliever. Carpenter is also not terribly valuable at this moment either. That's a very small amount of compensation for Felix Hernandez.
Ummm....
What? He's in our top 5 easily.
On one hand makes me happy he puts us as one of those 8 teams.
Other hand sucks we won't ever get Felix.
We have the 22nd ranked farm system according to baseball america. Being in our top 5 isn't saying that much right now. For many teams he's not in the top 10.
He isn't just Top 5 though, he is number 2. He's in any team's top 10s except Kansas City, probably Tampa Bay, and maybe Atlanta.
Well I've doubled checked and he's 48th overall going into 2011. Better than I thought but still nothing special. You don't think twice about trading him when the incoming compensation is Felix Hernandez.
Ya, but when you add Jackson and everyone else on the list, consume salary, and end up with what? 1 year of him? And we don't need more pitching. If we got him for several years, great, but one year for all that, not so much.
Not sure how long is left on his contract though, just guessing.
Jackson is a nice but not special prospect, as is McNutt. The rest are even less as far as prospects go. You don't hold onto a small collection of mid-level or lower prospects when a cy young winner not even in his prime is the compensation. 1 year for those prospects wouldn't be worth it, but the Cubs should be able to pay for their own players (as he would thereafter become).
All of this is purely academic, but if you're saying Felix Hernandez isn't worth Brett Jackson, Trey McNutt, Vitters, Dolis and Carpenter I have to disagree.
No, he's worth it, but not now. If we are in a position where we have completed our rebuilding process and are ready, you get him and another key piece. You get the Prince (from the our neighbors to the South, not Fatty) and the King next off-season, but try to get a better deal on Felix. :crazydance:
I don't know that you can get that deal on Felix if he waves his no trade clause, but this wasn't about "should be trade for Felix." This was simply about assessing his value and I think you're still somewhat undervaluing a 25 year old ace and/or overvaluing those Cubs prospects.
I just don't think it would be wise to trade for him now. If he's only 25, there's more time before he's a FA, so get him when he has 1 year left and extend him.
To be honest, I don't wanna trade B-Jax at all, but if we did make a big trade requiring that, it should be for a 2B, not an SP.
Agreed. I was just trying to discuss his value in a hypothetical trade.
This seems rather strange to me. And for the record, I very much like Bjax. The moment he joins the Cubs he's going to be their best lead off hitter and he's going to help them in the field. However he's not someone you don't trade if the right deal comes around. I doubt it does come but just for sake of argument he isn't untouchable. Also, why would you trade a leadoff hitter/center fielder for a second baseman? Obviously to some degree it depends on who the second baseman is but you should be able to fill that position for much less in payment than Bjax.
