Race for Team 20 Heats Up

As the race for MLS team #20 continues to develop, new players emerge and old players fade. We reported last month about Orlando’s ascendency into the upper echelons of expansion talk discussion. The continued attendance success of third division Orlando City SC and the strong local and English based ownership group continues to attract the attention of MLS. Now, Las Vegas has entered the fray with several potential interested investors. New York and Miami appear to be fading forces. The finances of the Wilpon’s and demands of the Cosmos continue to weaken NYC2, while Miami’s Marcelo Claure has yet to find interested investors to take a flier on what is considered a tough soccer market. Miami’s attractiveness may be improved by the continued strong attendance for the second division Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Word on the street is that the MLS team #20 could cost an expansion fee of $100 million, which is a strong indication of MLS’ recent marketing success.

And just prior to receiving that we got the following report sent to us from a reader in our inbox:

With eyes on Detroit, Silverdome owners submit Major League Soccer expansion bid

Here is an excerpt:

Triple Sports and Entertainment, the owners of the Silverdome, have taken the next formal step toward acquiring an expansion team by submitting an application to MLS with the goal of fielding a team in the next few years. However, they will have to get in line as bringing a second franchise to the New York market is currently front and center according to MLS officials.

“We’re in discussions with the league, and we’ve met several times,” said Steve Apostolopoulos, the president of sports at the Silverdome. “There is a process that potential ownership has to follow and we’re very happy with how things are progressing.”

Major League Soccer (MLS) Rumors – For the time between the games

Wow... the former favorites, the New York Cosmos, are fading away?

Bidders now are everywhere:
Atlanta
Las Vegas
New York
Ottawa
Miami (Not Again! See Miami Fusion)
Phoenix
San Antonio
San Diego
Tampa (Not Again! See Tampa Bay Mutiny)

I wasn't even aware of any interest in half of these cities!

If NYC really is fading away, then I want Atlanta to get it, as we have no soccer in the southeast now, and with the Thrashers leaving, the MLS team could capitalize on their fans not knowing what to do anymore.

Where do you guys think the 20th team should/will be?

I wouldn't really believe anything on MLS Rumors. But, having grown up in Michigan, I'd have to hope that Detroit gets a team. The 20th will be New York though. The MLS really wants a second team there.

The southeast is entirely a football region. No one there will go to soccer games. Let me rephrase that... not enough people will regularly support a soccer team there to be able to support a franchise.

Ya, IK... giaco told me that it wasn't the best source, but it is still interesting anyway. :)

I hope the Cosmos win the bid too.

If Detroit got a team, you'd still be a Fire fan though, right?

lol, I think you misread. I never said I want the cosmos to win the bid, just that they will.

And "Fire Till I Die" is not just a chant. I will continue to support the Fire full heartedly. I would, however, cheer for Detroit in every game they play that is not against the Fire. Unless we are battling for a playoff spot, then eff that.

Gotcha, that's exactly what I thought I'd hear from you. Detroit or St. Louis would be good because they would be natural rivals for us and draw some big crowds.

St. Louis would also be a good one (and a good one for me to hate, since its a shared Detroit/Chicago rival, in the NHL at least), but I think they're having trouble even financing their current lower level team.

Ya, they probably won't get it.

You like hockey? Or just know they're rivals? If you do, do you like the Hawks or the Wings?

You should go to a game if they get it. Or maybe a friendly against a Euro team.

Love hockey. Drove to Toronto on Memorial Day weekend just to play it.

I'm a Wings fan. *runs*
I don't hate the Blackhawks though. I'll root for them unless they're playing the Red Wings, or their winning would hurt the Red Wings in some fashion.

I see. That's fine, I mean we already have to deal with Packers fans here anyway. :smug:
