BRIDGEVIEW, Illinois (AP)—The Chicago Fire dismissed Mexican coach Carlos de los Cobos on Monday after his struggling Major League Soccer team recorded only one win in 11 games this season.
Fire technical director Frank Klopas will serve as the interim coach for the rest of the season.
Javier Leon, an executive representing team owner Andrew Hauptman, announced the changes in a statement released Monday.
“Since the Fire has elected to move in a new direction with its coaching staff midseason, we wanted to ensure a seamless transition by naming Frank Klopas interim head coach,” said Leon, the managing director of Andell Sports.
“Frank’s wealth of knowledge and experience as a player, scout, technical director and coach provide an extraordinary background for him to manage the team successfully as we work towards a MLS Cup playoff spot.”
The 52-year-old De los Cobos, a former El Salvador national team coach, last led Chicago to a win on March 26 against Kansas City.
Klopas played on the Fire’s inaugural 1998 team that won the Major League Soccer title and the U.S. Open Cup championship.
Really should have expected this.
