The older I get the harder it is to stay in reasonable shape, to assist in my eternal struggle not to turn into a real fatass I was looking at fitbits and similar things. Any of you guys have one? Are they useful? How good are they at actually tracking heart rate and calories burned and all that jazz?

The fact of the matter is, wearing one as a reminder helps a lot of people push over the edge and is partial motivation to do more than you normally would. The monetary investment means you will commit yourself and defend the purchase more. The visual reminder will make you set small goals to go along with bigger goals. One of those things where you wont know what you're going to do with it, until you experience it firsthand.

They aren't all that accurate though, which is why the trend on these is everywhere. No fitness tracker/smartwatch on the market is highly accurate. Which is expected, the sensors haven't changed much in 15 years.

So really, if you're the kind of person who knows deep down they wont ignore any form of fitness tracking device, you'll be better than without. If you know you'll wind up blowing it off, then keep searching. I had a misfit shine just because it didn't look as douchey like a guy wearing a womens hairband or those stupid livestrong bracelets. It was a fun toy before it got old, but it still works as a watch. The options are even better now.

My wifey uses a "leaf" and loves it, feels it's accurate. It's a clip on rather than a bracelet, and kind of looks like jewelry. Tracks her steps sleep etc and has an internal battery that lasted 4 months before we replaced it. Syncs to her phone. Not sure if they make a manly version...

I have a fitbit, and I love it. I would agree with Crys on the motivation aspect. I like winning the badges.

I got my wife a fitbit and a few guys at work have fitness trackers of some flavor. They generally like them but the novelty of it wears off pretty quickly. What I've noticed that they're great for is 1) counting steps and 2) seeing some difference in calories burned between rest and activity

Not very accurate and there have been some studies that show they don't actually help much with weight loss. It's easy to justify eating that ice cream because you had 1000 xtra steps. I have one, used it about a month and stopped. My wife still uses hers off and on, mainly as a pedometer. Saves some money and get a pedometer app or a $20 pedometer at a store.

My wife loves hers; I hate shit on my wrist.

Personally, I don't think they're that accurate or the end-all-beat-all when it comes to fitness (or what lack of fitness I have). I walk the same exact rout to/from work every day, and the tracker that came standard with my phone, no matter how much it's updated, is all over the map.
