Watching the Apollo: Missions to the Moon. I just wonder how people can still believe that the earth is flat. Can you help explain why @Omeletpants or @Mongo_76 ? I’m sure you two are prominent members of the society. I for one can’t deny we went to the moon or the that the earth is indeed round. What a great documentary

What if the earth was originally flat and then a black hole formed underneath PANGEA and formed it into a sphere and all the dinosaurs just fell off/got pulled into the earths crust (fossils)?

They don't really believe it. Er, well the schizophrenic ones might, but they are a big minority. Most of them are just lonely and isolated and found a mechanism of connection and community as flat earthers.

And the conspiracy component gives people that feel powerless to change their life the feeling like they know who to blame for their problems and even if they can't do anything about it, they at least have the inside knowledge.

If any of them had any real desire to prove anything, they could just rent a plane at any time.

Wrong posters. The correct posters are @Spartan and @Broc. They are the resident conspiracy theorist.

what the shit are you even talking about?

I would think that you would be more accustomed to not understanding what people are talking about by now. Time to stop drawing conclusions from your own confusion.

"We have reviewed the current literature on the psycho-logical factors that appear to drive conspiracy belief. We conclude that conspiracy belief appears to stem to a large extent from epistemic, existential, and social motives. "

"The researchers found that reasons for believing in conspiracy theories can be grouped into three categories:"
  • The desire for understanding and certainty
  • The desire for control and security
  • The desire to maintain a positive self-image

bot is right. I watched the movie below several months ago. Most of them are kind of needy, and when they convene, it is more like a support group than anything else. Somewhat humorous, but more sad really.

Yeah. And if they had an actual interest in demonstrating a flat earth, again, they could quit with all the inferential horseshit science and just rent a plane and fly to the edge. But its not really about a flat earth.

Some of them do try actual experiments, and then try to refuse the results, or blame the equipment. That's where the humour comes in. I found the film interesting, in a Gates of Heaven way.

Right, but thats what I mean. The experiments they choose are super oblique and inferential and require absurd amounts of precision because they make these tiny measurements (when compared to the scale of the earth) and try to use them to determine the shape of the planet.

All when it is pretty fucking easy and practical to make direct, conclusive observations of the planet.
