The Philadelphia Flyers signed Nikolai Zherdev to a one year deal today. The Flyers only had slightly over 1 million in cap space to work with before they signed Zherdev and this all but guarantees they move Simon Gagne who has been in trade talks for months now. Zherdev is a talented young winger who played in the Russian KHL last season because the Rangers could not come to terms with his contract coming out of arbitration. His best two seasons were his last 2 in the NHL, one with Columbus and the other with the Rangers, and is capable of being 60-70 point player. I could not find the details of how much the deal is worth but as soon as I find out I will post them.
This is not an upgrade over Gagne, if that is in fact who he replaces, but Zherdev does not have the injury concerns Gagne does and is younger and cheaper. I am surprised a 25 year old player like Zherdev could not find a longer term deal with another team.
