Only 5 out of the top 20 highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL, are guards...

Cosmi (Washington Commanders), Hunt (Jaguars), Nelson (Colts), Lindstrom (Falcons), and Dickerson (Eagles). And Zero Centers make the cut.

If we follow the money it seems pretty clear that Tackles > Guards > Centers, when it comes to positional value. With that said, the Bears are #30 in offensive line spending and 68 sacks later on a rookie QB reflects that a change is definitely in order.

Pricing for guards is on the rise though as seen in recent years. There are so many great DTs and interior pressure completely wrecks game plans, guards are going to continue to get paid more and more.

I doubt guards will ever be as valuable as tackles although philosophies differ on whether the line should be built from the inside out or vice versa.

If the Bears wanted to, they could easily bring back a lineup of:

Braxton - Teven - Shelton - Pryor - Wright...

The undersized center is the most obvious candidate to be replaced but after him the biggest upgrade wouldn't be a guard it would be at tackle.

Even with Nate Davis and a top 10 pick they are 30th?

Plus Jenkins...and Jones ..

And Bates

That 5 should have been ok. I think all 5 were out towards the end.

Spotrac 2024 offensive line spending

Lions were #1 and Bears #30. Basically they were paying scraps for LT and Center. Bates never stayed healthy which threw everything off from the start.

I think Matt Pryor was a bit of a find and could be at least a Braxton Jones level RG if they don't have a horrible Center next to him.

This is what makes defenses with a elite 3tech or other interior d lineman so disruptive. Normally teams prioritize the tackle position, thinking that they can protect the middle with double teams and movement. When the defense has a guy that completely wreck that plan right up the middle... it usually spells disaster for the offense unless they figure out how to adjust. Last year's spending spree on FA guards may signal a new trend going forward.

Center would be the most cost effective spending with the biggest impact on the line. Seems like a no brainer.

If you draft an OT at 10, you can spend on an OG, draft another, keep Brax for a year hoping he gets beat out and is just quality depth.

As valuable as a whole? No, they likely never will be…but the cost to sign and retain OGs is going up and I expect that to continue. They’re more valued than ever before

Aaron Donald and Fletcher Cox are retired Chris Jones is on his way out soon. There's really no other generational DT to deal with other than Carter and they'll only have to game plan for him once a year or once every 4 years.

The rest are all old.

It's rare that the best defense in the league is anchored by the 3tech. Outside of Aaron Donald I can't think of another. Collapsing the pocket will always be the quickest way to wreck an offense but it's still manageable with modern offensive schemes

Well the Eagles have a fairly good 3tech in Jalen Carter. Guess we'll get to see Sunday if it' matters or not.

Carter is just one component of that defense. He is dominant in stretches but I don't see him or his 4.5 sacks as a one man wrecking crew.

Yes, but because of all of the additional talent on that Dline, he only needs to be dominant in stretches. Not saying he's the nucleus or anything... but if KC doesn't double team him, he will be disruptive.

If Trey Smith is worth what people want to pay him the chiefs should handle him just fine
