I'm not a Mac guy, but if someone actually has an answer to "I want it to be like when I first purchased it" then I will buy a Mac.

Besides formating the HD, I know of no way to have a computer function at it's peak/basic performance.

(Maybe I'm being too anal!)

I'm not sure how to do it with a Mac. PC, reformat, have system disks, 90 minutes later, good to go.

I'm a unix guy, so my method to doing anything never deals with a format. Just clean that sucker up, remove all of the programs that you don't use, go lightweight and update/add from there.

You're better off familiarizing yourself with filesystem, than just trusting a few programs to do it(break it) for you.

k.. if you want to just do a fresh install, no problem.

#1, make sure you have everything you want to keep on your drive, saved someplace other than your computer. So like, online, or on an external drive ect.
-Just boot the install disk. A DVD icon should pop onto your desktop(sometimes it comes up on its own).
-It should have an icon that says Install OSX. Click that, and after the first prompt comes up, go to the advanced option. There should only be 2, upgrade and tools or something.
-Then you need to go to disk utilities, so you can erase the drive. Sometimes you have to restart before it allows you to do it. Now just erase the drive and from this point, you can't go back until the MacOSX installation is complete.

The rest should be pretty self explainable, it will basically restore a clean installation onto the drive.

good luck

BTW, something I do out of my own precaution. Make a backup install disc!!! If the one you have, has a scratch or bad sector on it, then your install might not go through. At least if you copy the disc and make a backup, you can recover the sectors with most burning programs.
