Fowler's latest: Some inside the league are watching Chicago here. General manager Ryan Poles, who needs to drastically improve his interior offensive line for new coach Ben Johnson, was in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted Smith. Several teams have him as the top overall free agent.

What are you reading? Seems like everything in the link you posted that he was likely to hit FA. They can't find a suitor for Jawaan Taylor that'll trade for him.

The article linked doesn't really say that unless I'm half asleep and missing it.

^^^ this says the opposite
“So, in light of KC’s struggles at the tackle spots, and since Thuney is under contract for just one more year, Veach may try to find a way to keep Smith on the roster. Indeed, Graziano believes the GM will do just that, and he predicts the Chiefs will authorize a five-year, $105MM accord ($65MM guaranteed) for the Tennessee product. The $21MM average annual value on such a deal would match Eagles LG Landon Dickerson’s at the top of the guard market, while the guaranteed money would represent a new high-water mark for guards.”

Sorry. Graziano believes they keep him(not Fowler, too many sloe gin fizzes tonight), Thuney is gone after ‘25(or even sooner) and they keep him. They could easily manipulate Thuney’s cap hit (or Smith’s)and keep Smith.

Why would KC let him go? The salary cap can be easily manipulated if they wanted him to stay
You can only run your team like a Madden franchise for so long. You have to make smart “cuts” to avoid a Ryan Pace situation.

The Chiefs have over $150 million a year tied up in 4 guys:
*Mahomes
*Chris Jones
*Jawaan Taylor
*Joe Thuney

That's not even counting the $20 million a year for Kelce, the $6 million they pay a kicker, and whatever inevitable veterans who want a ring they go after during this free agency period.

If they kept Trey Smith, they would be allocating around $85 million a year to their starting o-line, growing to probably $100 million the following year.

I’d not say easily... McDuffie and Karlaftis are former 1sts and both can get extended and I bet both will command solid paydays. McDuffie will actually be at the top of the CB market. You can’t keep reseting the market with all your players. Something has to give. They’ll have to decide which of those positions they can replace easiest cause they probably won’t keep all 3.

Just look at 2026… Mahomes will be at about 70 million and Chris Jones at 40 million… and add a 20+ million Trey plus the names I just mentioned.. McDuffie over 20. Humphrey will be 18 million too (highest paid center). Jawaan is 27. Then add in paying Chenal and Watson. Could they make it work? Maybe, but they’ll be carrying very heavy risk.

Honestly, go read Chiefs forums too and it feels like the general consensus is to let Trey walk. For example:

The Chiefs aren't letting him go. this is just CCS trying to talk it into existence, happens all the time
And what do you think Chiefs forums are saying then? You should go check it out.

The Chiefs have not yet begun to go full New Orleans Saints salary cap style yet. If there ever was a reason to do it then the current Chiefs are it.

Mahomes is not and was never going to be playing under his upcoming 2025 $66 Mil 24% cap #. That will be redone this off season. the 2025 season is the last of his guaranteed money. Plus a few other little things if needed and the Chiefs are good going into 2025 with Smith if they choose.

After the 2025 season Jawaan Taylor, if cut, is a $7.3 M dead cap and a $20 M cap savings. Also Chris Jones's guaranteed money will have run out so I'm sure he and the Chiefs will be happy to redo some of his money if needed. Humphrey is not a problem. McDuffy and Karlaftis if needed can have their new contracts a little lighter going into 2026 with more pushed into 2027 and beyond. Same for Chenal and Watson if desired.

It appears as if the Chiefs have done a good job of staggering their contracts year by year and can continue.

The idea is to prioritize keeping outstanding players. Let the average ones go if you have to . They are always going to be similar players available.

I'd be surprised of KC didn't find a way to retain Smith.

Looking at free agency I expect the DL to get more attention than the OL with the draft being OL heavy.

Chiefs will retain Smith and the rest of the OL free agents are meh.

(If Smith was available the Bears would make him the highest paid guard in the NFL. I just don’t think they let him hit the market)

I could see Nagy lobbying to get Teven Jenkins to replace him at less than half the cost…. I would be surprised if KC were able to keep Trey.
