I loved The National.

The National did a five part series on The Computer Group. There is still information out there on the subject that is poorly written and factually challenged. From what I remember a computer programmer named Michael Kent was helping to develop nuclear submarines for Westinghouse. Back in the 70's he and his co-workers were on a softball team, Kent developed a program that would accurately predict the outcomes of their league softball games. Over the years he modified it to predict college football and basketball, very accurately. So they moved to Vegas in the 80's and made a shit ton of money. The funniest part was how the FBI thought these guys were running an illegal sports book, which they were not. Where they fucked up is they got involved with Dr. Ivan Mindlin who had shady characters placing bets all over the country based on the Groups info, so they got busted and shut down, Kent didn't do any time..
This is the closest thing to an accurate story I could find.

The Nationals series was so much better, more interesting and compelling, I really wish i could find it. That paper was so much better than anything being written today.
RIP Frank.
