Are there any good ones? Similar to photoshop maybe, w/out the price tag?

I use Gimp just as much as I use Photoshop. Gimp does some things better than photoshop, and photoshop does some things better than Gimp. Once you get used to the interface, it's easy, as that is the biggest hurdle for a photoshop user, not the software capabilities itself.

Inkscape and scribus are two we tell people to use when they want to design thier own print work. They are more like illustrator and indesign though.

Gimp is easier to learn than Photoshop. Neither are really easy, but Gimp is the way to go.

Yeah, X should specify if he is looking to do image editing, or vector graphics editing.

Seriously. Learn Gimp. And like someone mentioned, from a starters standpoint, many people find using Gimp to be easier. And I agree, that is true. Gimp tries to mimic some of the good features of photoshop, and it also has innovated it's own features. Plus Gimp can be used to create vector images, and other vector image software share more of the same language and features with Gimp, than it does photoshop.

And in case you were wondering: Vector images just mean they are scalable, so instead of using a per-pixel format, it uses a geometric format to remember the angle of points, curves and distances. When you take a picture with a camera, a camera does not know the difference between points, which is why they are in pixels.

I got used to it, because every so often something else comes out and moves all the tools on me. Even Adobe is guilty of doing this a few times with photoshop. I started on Deluxe Paint in the 80s, then Fractal Painter until I moved to Photoshop. Those were really some drastic re-learning changes for me. But the crazy thing about Gimp, is that you can theme it(both look-wise, and keyboard shortcuts) to work and feel like photoshop. That's how I finally stopped using corkscrew in linux(Adobe's official wine emulated release of Photoshop that runs flawlessly.) But over time, you start to see the logic of some of the Gimp design features. So now I like both, and if/when Adobe 're-envisions' how photoshop should work with some crazy ideas that I wont like, I(or anyone in the same boat) will have a huge head start on Gimp.

And I believe somewhere people have released quick configs to do the same thing as manually editing Gimp, so all you need to do is replace a file, and poof, Photoshop theme. But since I edit Photoshop's defaults anyways for my own liking, I just do it manually. Set it and forget it for a few years of Gimp updates, and the interface is still how I like it.

My company finally switched to the Adobe cloud thing where you get all the programs and upgrades for a monthly price. We had gotten to where we were 2 versions behind and had to get customers to save back thier files.
