Are there any good ones? Similar to photoshop maybe, w/out the price tag?

I use Gimp just as much as I use Photoshop. Gimp does some things better than photoshop, and photoshop does some things better than Gimp. Once you get used to the interface, it's easy, as that is the biggest hurdle for a photoshop user, not the software capabilities itself.
Inkscape and scribus are two we tell people to use when they want to design thier own print work. They are more like illustrator and indesign though.
much appreciated. DL'd Gimp - gonna play around w/ it for a few days.Seriously. Learn Gimp. And like someone mentioned, from a starters standpoint, many people find using Gimp to be easier. And I agree, that is true. Gimp tries to mimic some of the good features of photoshop, and it also has innovated it's own features. Plus Gimp can be used to create vector images, and other vector image software share more of the same language and features with Gimp, than it does photoshop.
And in case you were wondering: Vector images just mean they are scalable, so instead of using a per-pixel format, it uses a geometric format to remember the angle of points, curves and distances. When you take a picture with a camera, a camera does not know the difference between points, which is why they are in pixels.

I tried it for like a day once and said "**** this, back to photoshop"
image editing and layering, primarily.
