I've been reading around online that if you get a digital antenna for your HDTV you can get your local CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS and FOX all in HD for free?

Has anyone tried this or is it just hog wash?

I'll hang up and listen for your answer.

I'm not sure, but I think it is free. Those channels are on basic cable, which is free.

Not all of them are HD. Most of them are still 480i transmissions. But yeah, you can get digital TV through microwaves(air).

That is what the interwebz people were saying. I don't need HDTV or or anything, I just figured it would be solid to watch the Bears in HD when they're on FOX or CBS or something.

True that, as I had to check AntennaWeb to see if my local channels are in HD, they are BTW.

So this whole thing is legit then?

CBS, NBC, ABC, WGN, PBS, WCIU, and FOX all have free HD broadcasts. Not everything in broadcast in HD. As long as you have an HDTV, you can receive the signals by buying an antenna. You'll also get some other channels which will just be broadcast in 480i. I have a TV in my house which isnt hooked up to the Dish that runs this way (We're able to use our roof Antenna from when the house was built in the 80's for this broadcasts).

I just have basic cable with no HD channels but then when I bought my most recent tv, all the locals channels came in HD for free. Not sure why but yeah it's probably legitimate.

Its basically the same as the old analogue antenna's. As long as you got the TV, you could get the TV signals without an extra charge. Same basic concept with HD now. And now that the government has said Digital is the norm, we pretty much have free HD for local channels.
