For the most part, it didn’t. The participants who self-identified as conservative believed the misinformation on WMD and taxes even more strongly after being given the correction. With those two issues, the more strongly the participant cared about the topic — a factor known as salience — the stronger the backfire. The effect was slightly different on self-identified liberals: When they read corrected stories about stem cells, the corrections didn’t backfire, but the readers did still ignore the inconvenient fact that the Bush administration’s restrictions weren’t total.
I've known this for a while now. You can see it for yourself right here on these forums.
All you need to do for internet debate is to start your post with "FACT" then end it with "WAKE UP", maybe through in a few links from your favorite website that slants it's political view to yours and when all else fails say "liberal media" or "drive by media".
Example
FACT: Obama has a 9 headed son, and he's going to unfairly raise taxes to pay for the removal of 7 of the heads

WAKE UP!!

This is partly why I generally ask "why?" when so many on here clamor for links, links, links. I usually post opinion, I'll admit it. The beauty of the net is that you can post links all day long to support your opinion, but that does't mean they are any more true than those which refute your opinion.
I am bumping this a while after. I suppose it is appropriate because I had heard about this study a while before the OP.
I may have put this in the book thread at some point.....
The Authoritarians (free ebook in PDF) has explained a lot on how people ignore evidence and hold contradictions and double standards within themselves while they seem totally oblivious to them.
I have found this book to be very enlightening, as now I can better understand some behaviors of people I know, and their motivations for those behaviors. I think it has helped me understand and deal better with some people at work. Now I get along better with my slightly authoritarian follower "higher up".
Now I also understand the behavior of many posters I see on other forums. Not so much here. Well, there was Fluff. He is truly an authoritarian follower.
People simply have their beliefs, no matter how they were developed in them. It will generally take a hell of alot of "proof" or evidence in general for people to accept some of their own views as being wrong or false. I include myself in this observation as well. Generally i do come around if a view point hold is not entirely right, or correct. It may take a hell of alot of prodding, though. Some unfortunately never will. I try my best to keep my opinions and view points "on the level" as best as I can, but sometimes your perception of reality is skewed, its hard to abandon things you believe to be true even in the face of hard evidence, and some things simply arent black and white and people have differing opinions, neither of which are right or wrong, but both believe their opinion to be the correct one.
