In game 5, Ben Gordon scored 26 points, while Derrick Rose scored 14. Obviously, Gordon stepped up in the clutch while Rose shrunk.

But here, what I want to point out is how Rose isn't really that effective of a player because of his inability to get to the line, and his lack of any sort of three point shooting. He didn't take a three, even though Rondo was like 8 feet away sagging in the lane.

Here was each players shooting for this game:

Ben Gordon: 6-21 (28.6%)
Derrick Rose: 7-16 (43.8%)

But then you look at their TS%.

Ben Gordon: 49.5%
Derrick Rose: 43.8%

Gordon had a higher efficiency than Rose, despite shooting like crap. This is just a shining example of why Rose needs to add a three point shot this summer.

And able to hit the defender's body when he goes up for a layup. Coz if he gets more free throws, his efficiency will rise big time as those shots won't go in the missed column and he will get to the free throw line for more points.

He did get fouled atleast couple of times last night and 1 BOGUS offensive foul that could have put him on the line atleast 2 or 3 more times.

Let's see if he get that next year - now take a look:

7-14 for 17/18 points (with 3 or 4 made free throws) that would raise his TS% to big rise.

That´s what I said in an other thread. As a PG you must be able to shoot threes. I don´t know why Rose is that bad at it. What has he done all the time?
I don´t know any guard except Rose who can´t shoot threes. In the NBA this is a no-go in my eyes.

That Michael Jordan guy did okay without shooting 3s.

Prior to this season Dwyane Wade didn't shoot 3s.
Tony Parker became great when he stopped trying to shoot 3s.

Neither LeBron nor Kobe shoot 3s particularly well as both are sub 35% for their careers.

As a side note, while Rose's shooting isn't great right now, it's improved tremendously since college. He's, at the very least, going to be a studly mid range shooter in a couple years even if he never shoots 3s. That will likely be good enough.

Hmm the guys you listed shoot over 30%. Except Wade.

Michael Jordan: 32,7%
Dwyane Wade: 28,5%
LeBron James: 32,8%
Kobe Bryant: 34,1%
Tony Parker: 31,3%

Derrick Rose only shoots 22,2%. I know that he only played one season and that his percentage will get better. But 10% less than the others is a lot in 3point shooting.

Look at Ray Allen. He is 39,8%. So Kobe is real close to him. I would not let Kobe or LeBron shoot wide open.

And if the D has to guard Rose closer because he is dangerous from downtown he can drive to the basket better.

but see, he can hit that mid-range jumper, so defenses still have to play him closer. plus if the defender backs off, it creates an easy screen and wide open passing or driving lanes.

Derricks 3 point shooting will come around.

Thats not to say that he can/will become a deadly 3 point shooter, but it will get better.

Thorpe mentinoed that his mechanics make his shot very flat, and when your hoisting up shots from the 3 point line, the higher arc the better (think Ben Gordon). He probably needs to fix a few things in his release before he is able to knock down some 3's.

Derrick's 3pt pct of 22% is really mis-leading.

How many 3's does he even take? He was shooting about 30% when he was ACTUALLY shooting it, but last 2 months or so, he is not been shooting at all, other than those end of the half 3's that he misses and that dropped off his 3pt shooting pct to 22%.

I think he doesn't trust his 3pt shooting and doesn't even take 3s.

I am pretty sure he will be a descent 3pt shooter (somewhere around 32% by end of next year).

Possibly 35% by his 3rd year.

I am really not worried about that, I am more worried about him getting to the line than anything else (other tahn Defense).

The problem is, Rose isn't even a threat to shoot the three. He is scared to take them for some reason.

Rondo, for example, isn't known as a three point shooter, but he took some when he was wide open, and ended up 2-2 from three yesterday.

If Derrick has an open three, he has to take it.
