This should have been passed years ago:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP/WPSD) - The Illinois House has approved a measure that would prohibit using cell phones while driving.

The 64-46 vote Friday moves the bill to the state Senate for consideration. The measure would force drivers to use hands-free devices or use speakerphone features for calls.

As long as I can still eat a bowl of chili whilst I drive, this law does not bother me at all.

I guarantee within 6 years Bluetooh will be standard equipment in all cars in order to aid with this law. Voice to text is already becoming more common. Both need to be implemented so the roads are safer. It blows my mind how many people I see texting while they drive.

It blows my mind how shitty people are at driving, and how dicourteous they are before the cell comes into play. A honk and a middle finger have been replaced by attempted vehicular manslaughter. I blame this on pompous atheists.

What I don't understand is why drivers don't simply use speaker feature, rather than trying to hear out of an earphone and losing use of an arm in the process.

I'll bet most that talk and drive don't even know it exists on their phones.

Damn, the trucker saw it coming and still couldn't avoid that one. Once the skid started, driver panicked and overcompensated.

I ride a motorcycle... and can say without any doubt that it has become far more dangerous since cell phones have become popular.
People cut you off, pull in front of you, etc... and 8 times out of ten they are on the damn phone and don't even notice what they just did...
Have to be careful out there...

Cool. I don't ever use my phone while I'm driving anyway. I never even respond to a call or text since my phone is always on vibrate and I keep it under my balls when I'm driving. It's the kind of tickle that feels good.

I stopped riding my Wing about 3 years ago for that very reason...too many distracted drivers (kids on spring break chat'n).

I rented a Chevy something last year and it mugged my phone whenever I got near it. I couldn't "Manually" take control of a call unless I pulled over, so I had to answer calls through the steering wheel buttons, just like on my motorcycle controls. Go figure...

Now they just need to quadruple the fine on motorcyclists for swerving in and out of traffic.

Don't think that would matter... I've never heard of a guy getting a ticket for it... a warning for changing lanes without a signal... but not a ticket.
I've seen tickets for lane splitting which is legal in most of the world and California... but not most states.
I don't lane split due to the danger... I do change lanes often but give a quick signal first... even if just one blink.

Here in Colorado motorcycles are pretty bad about doing 90 and flying between lanes. I certainly wouldn't ride a cycle in Denver. Super dangerous. I watched a guy go flying into the back of a car right in front of me when traffic stopped. I also responded to a guy that went over a guardrail on i70. We removed from the tree and I was about to start CPR when cops showed up and kicked us out. They didn't even care about the guy. Hard to leave him. He spoke a few garbled words to me. Found out later he died. I wouldn't ride a motorcycle amongst other drivers after that.

On topic. Good. Using your phone while driving is ridiculous. But they need to get rid of people using their gps and movie players as well. Seen that too much as well.

Yeah, I know too many people that can't drive with their navigation system.

People are stupid, and the way legislators think, is they will then create a licensing structure for cell-phones, and if you get caught on a phone while driving, you'll lose your cellphone privileges(already talked about in DoT and FCC committees.)

The title of this thread makes sun biz sound like an 80! Year old woman.

Your sig is taken out of context.

Should read, history is out-dated as it relates to modern education...like the thread from which it came.

Great points by everyone. Anyone else annoyed at how much we use our phones in general? I'm as guilty as the rest and I can't stop myself sometimes from checking it. As soon as there is a minute of boredom I check it. I even do phantom checks. I feel like the cell phone has taken over our lives.
